Here are some table top ideas for word and sentence building using the printables from www.senteacher.org
literacy fans - each pupil had a fan of the sounds they have covered so far and a list of words or words on cards provided by the teacher. Pupil makes the word with the fans, writes down and then draws a picture of the word. Can also be used with word scrambler below.
photo cards – make picture and word matching games for playing snap/pairs /snakes and ladders– choose words from either their L & S work or from a book you have been sharing –
Additional activity linked to above-can they find the target words in an appropriate book and write down the page number on which the word occurred
Literacy dice – for word building – link this to your L & S work. Have three dice, the middle one is for vowels and coloured differently. Have a cvc phoneme sequencing board that matches this. Pupil makes the combinations thrown by the three dice on the board and writes down the ones that make real words.
Literacy dominoes & Onset and rime tiles – self explanatory. But I also get the kids to make sets for each other. I also use these as cut and paste activities where they have to make a long chain of words and stick it on a piece of paper
Connective Tiles – Brilliant for sentence ordering – these can be related to either L & S sentences or to sentences from a reading book or about the child. Each sentence can be stand alone, or they can link together to make a whole story. Child can illustrate the sentences and make little books out of them. Wouldn’t be without this one.
ABC cards – again self explanatory
Word scrambler – used alongside magnetic letters – can the pupil work out the mystery words andwrite them down- again I link this to their phonic work |
