Authors and letters yr 3
I am currently starting to plan this year 3 unit and am struggling a little bit with the texts. We have a lot of Dick King Smith in school and I thought I could link this with some visual literacy and do some work on Babe.
But as I am planning phase 1, I am struggling with what to do with my SEN group. I have a large group of children who are Level 2C and below and they will be unable to read any of the texts independently during the immersion phase, whereas my top groups would be fine. Has anyone done this unit before and can you tell me how you organised your class?

My son has some Jeremy Strong so I'm going to dig those out and have a look, but they are the chapter books. I'll have to see what he does in a picture book. Unless I had the children looking at different authors for differentiation purposes. Could do Allan Ahlberg, Anthony Browne etc.

I did Julia Donaldson, Allan Ahlberg, Dick king Smith and Alex Cliff when I did this and my SEN group did Martin Waddell. Each group had a different author. I will see if I can find my planning to email you. Will let you know later if I can find it on a memory stick. For the letters aspect, I used Letters From a Mouse by H Brennan, which the class enjoyed so much that we read it all in one sitting!! We also wrote letters to Alex Cliff at the end of the unit.

Thanks for the offer magpie, I think I will go with a different author for each group for the first phase. Now I just need to motivate myself to actually start work!

Magpie thanks for the suggestion of Letters from a mouse. I ordered this book and it came this morning. I love it and am sure my class will. I'm looking forward to using it with them next week.
