Training was today in staff meeting. This is what our lit co-ord told us. "There is a new spelling scheme. I've got one copy and there's one for the staff room too. You can download it from the website. You do three lessons one week and two the next."
The whole thing lasted about a minute. No explanation, no suggestions for what to do, nothing. And this is a lead teacher. Unbelievable.

I will sort out some Y6 Term 1 stuff sometime soonish. But am just a bit dazed right now.

Thank you jog on - those powerpoints are fab.

Has anyone invented some sort of diagnostic dictation passage to identify gaps in spelling rules?  I have a feeling a large group of my Year 4s will need to start right back with -ed.

Unbelievable, JD1970.   Can't believe she hasn't even downloaded a copy for each of you!!

I'm on a full day course with the county advisors for this in October.   Not planning to change anything I'm doing yet until I've at least got a hard copy of the document and been on the course which means I'll be starting off after half term.  If the dept for carpets and soft furnishings can't get their act together enough to publish the document and get people trained on it before a new school year, I'm stuffed if I'm introducing it on a whim.

I downloaded it today at school.
Sallymgoodman.....We've done some testing with ours to see who needs to be in which phonics group for a whole ks2 phonics group work with mixes ages. We made up sentences using words from letters and sounds and then just words covering some of the spelling rules for beyond the L&S phases. I have paper copies in school but could ask if we have computer copy if you'd like a look.

Looks good jog_on. I would also add words that end in 'x' for your 'es'

Hi,

Just wondering how this is going in schools?  We haven't introduced this yet, a bit like Rainbow Bright we are waiting for the training etc.  My worry is where to fit it in  Would it be feasible to fit this in in the word/sentence input of a literacy lesson on the days when you need t do it rather than separate to the literacy lesson?!  Thanks would appreciate any comments on how you are delivering this and how long spent on it etc.

We fit it in during the lesson, so two/three times a week I do spelling almost as a starter type activity.  The rest of the time I work on sentences/grammar really.  It seems to be working ok at the moment.

Thanks so much!  Very Happy

No worries chatty - we haven't had any guidance from school at all.  Just told that new spelling document is out and that we should do it 2-3 times a week!

Thanks again, jogon - really good of you to share.  I feel a bit guilty as I also used your homophones one (well the first bit anyway), but as I've got mixed 3/4 I'm trying to plan to fit both in somehow. It's only partly successful, though keeping posters up for the yr 3 rules for them to add to has worked fairly well.  Even the weakest spellers have been picking up on -le words in their reading.  Even though sometimes they've found split digraphs (rather than -le after consonants) it has still resulted in lots of spelling discussion and much greater awareness of vowels/consonants.  Also, as a lit co who is also app leader I am also guilty of doing little beyond saying - you can download it from the internet.  There's just too much new to do at once (we're moving on to maths app this term and then reading app in Jan and I'm leading the insets for those as well as all the lit stuff).
