I know what you mean Rainbow, but from our scripts it seems that the marker was expecting degree level sentence construction!

This is the opening line for one of them-

Dear Sir,
Over the past week I have had the pleasure of trialling your aptly named Speedz sports shoe. Consequently, I would like to take up a moment of your time to provide you with some feedback which may assist you in making these shoes the market leader.......

SSP -2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good grief, smiley!  That's just plain daft, I'd have loved to read more like that when I was marking.   Seems you're right, your marker didn't seem to have a clue.

Sorry so many people are upset by the marking.

Mine did really well and i can only assume that the markers took great care over the papers - so if you were one of my markers  - thank you!
I was really pleased for my dyslexic girl she got level 3 for her reading and writing which is a huge improvement and I regard as one of my success stories. All my others were level 4 or better and my level 5's were the hihgest we have ever had.
However i know next year's cohort will not be as good  so now i need to begin managing expectations for next year where at least 4 of the 21 children are working at Level 2 - so that 's 20% who won't make level 4 barring a major miracle or similar!

ditto that - v. high % level 5s in English & Maths (still waiting for science).  Many thanks to our markers.

There IS hope with remarking - we appealed some last year & all were accepted & pushed up to the marks we felt they should have.  So good luck to those who plan to appeal!

We appealed a couple of individual Maths ones last year (including a clerical error one which put her down to a L4 (which was what she deserved according to the number correct!) rather than the 5 the marker had written on the sheet!

All our English papers were sent back for a remark and came back even lower!  Was a disaster!!!

'all our English papers'  - that's the key, I'm sure of it trinity.  Over the years we have sent all ours back on two occasions & the marks stayed the same.  But on the two occasions when we've been really selective in those we sent back & very specific about where we felt marks should have been awarded, the appeals have been upheld.

The problem was we had too many that had errors to be allowed to enter them individually, once it goes over a certain limit I think that they all had to be remarked. (not hard in a cohort that year of nearly 170!)

Didn't realise that.  Yes, that then is very difficult & don't see a way round it.

(I agree with those who say it is harder to get the higher level on a remark though - on my training, my team leader said so in as many words - even though she'd said she'd seen some 'shocking' marking over the years that had come to her on appeal.  I think - especially after last year - the whole system is now discredited & on borrowed time.)

I'm a parent of 2 Ks 3 children  and 1 KS 4 child and their KS 2 results gave  little clue to their subsequent progress and attainment. One was totally freaked out by KS 2 SATS and this has coloured every exam she has taken.
I want something to assess progress but not this.

Ks 2 said low level 4 for English.Ks 4 says Gifted and Talented.Writing school news reports.Writes for pleasure and reads non-stop.
Ks 2 said low level 4 for maths.Ks 4 says top set-M9 in year 10.

I have decided to be assertive in the morning. When I held the unopened envelopes in my hand I was sure I could predict every child's score.I really know my class. However on opening the mark sheet there were a few shocking results. For two days I have questioned myself. The weekend has given me the chance to decide that for a few of the scripts I can say "Oh well, never mind" but there are a few that I cannot let lie.I have 4 borderline total scores of 65(I think) and a few borderline 4/5 for writing.I have teacher assessed and levelled every half term. This has been moderated.I need to get someone to look at the marking with me to give me the confidence to challenge it.I am not questioning the ability of the marker but I do need to set my assessment inline with this.I am responsible for whole school literacy marking and reporting.I need to ensure I am getting it right. I am also helping other teachers with their approach to teaching writing.
What good am I if I can get it so wrong?

Thank you.Inside I am sure of what I teach and how my children are so I need to keep that foremost.
After the SATS week I said to the other teachers that I had done a good job and I felt that the children were really well prepared for what they were required to do in the papers.I was even smiling and a little pleased with myself!
As usual i am always seeing the negatives. My 4 special children with IEPs all got 4's for both English and Science so I should be celebrating for them. They will get into a decent set in KS 3.However one child will not get his new mobile phone as he only has a level 4 for english-he is on the top mark of the mark band.I told his parents that I had assessed him to be working at Level 5.They want him to have 5 in the test.
Any comments on the reading levels? I
Looking forward to maths...

'Borderlining' changed, last year I think.  Prior to that, as a marker I was 'unofficially' advised that when the thresholds came through (which was after most papers had been marked) we should look through & move heaven and earth to try to push every borderline child over the next level threshold.  Various reasons were given for this.  There was a claim though that this was happening often enough to skew the results so it was stopped from last year & as far as I know, markers aren't allowed to do it anymore.

Trollhula,

I'm sure you're not 'getting it wrong'!  I hadn't had my writing results back this year yet, but felt exactly the same last year after some unpredicted results.  Didn't panic too much as was convinced they'd go up on re-marking-but they came back unchanged.
Convinced myself I couldn't level properly, even though i've always been moderated as spot on and had had no problem any other year!  Asked for some help this year, again to be hold my levelling was spot on and the tests had just been harshly marked.
I do a lot of reading in this forum and not so much writing but I can see on here what dedicated and fantastic teachers there are out there and it makes me really sad that they can't just be trusted to get on with the wonderful job that they are doing!  Wish they'd just get rid of the stupid tests!! Here's hoping anyway!!
P.S. Good luck everyone going for re-marks, i'm crossing my fingers I won't have to go through that again this year!
