Only got English back so far, and we are pleased with them. I am a bit disappointed, however, as two of my definite 5's only got 4's as they did poor papers. All year they have written fabulous pieces of work, whatever the genre, but didn't on the day. Others did better than expected though, so balanced up. Value-added will go up also... roll on maths and science; literacy is always our worry.

JT, was it your level 5's that made you  Sad ? I have to say that I have no complaints with the marking at all, even though I scoured them to try and find something to criticise. So, well done to our marker!

Yes - now I know that most of you would be happy with the results that we have got, but they are not what they children were expected to get and they have been let down by a dreadful marker. SOme of our children who have worked so hard to improve from a low level 3 to an expected 4 - a couple of them were given 1 mark for SSPTO on the shorter task. 1 mark! when they had included expanded noun phrases, at least one complex sentence, a rhetorical question (correctly used) and interesting sentence structure. What planet was this marker on? Now as some of you know I am an experienced marker and this is the first time I have been close to tears with frustration when going through all our papers. It has taken me the whole day as we are a 2 form year group. It's all crazy!

Our English came back today and we are gutted - for the same reason. A good year group that should have had loads of level 5s - and did, in Maths and Science - but only 53% level 4 and above in writing! Despite our continued assessments! (Using Ros Wilson, previous Sats grids and moderation)

We are going to send the lot back.

Otherwise - what do we do? We thought we were well-trained and good at assessing writing. Look at at a piece and know at a glance if it is 3 - 4  -5 - and even the a, b and c!!!! Lots of moderation and training! If our results stand as low as they are - what have we learned as an ISP school??????

We think a student teacher or NQT must have marked ours!! How do we find out?

Anyone worked out the level thresholds yet?  That's one of my tasks this weekend, unfortunately haven't got english back yet so can't work out the combined scores.

Really sorry to hear that jt & assume you mean the writing.

Was reading something on 'Good Writers' by Pie Corbett the other day where he says that good writing isn't about 'gaining a level' and if this is the purpose (and let's face it, that's what SATs are), for most children it is not motivating & cannot be the driving force behind writing.

The most important thing is that the children you've taught HAVE been enthused to write this year.  And I'm sure they have.  Hang on to that!

No offence intended but advise you think about cherrypicking those you send back GG - have found in the past, this yields a better remark result.

When I was in Y6 2 years ago, 2 parents died - they each had twins - got special consideration for all 4 them, how come you can't?
