Y2 Subtraction maths lesson

Hello,

I am being observed on a maths lesson this week in Y2 and the topic is subtraction. I have 5 different levels of ability in my class from very able to very poor.

I was thinking of doing a problem solving lesson involving money and change  where they can choose a item to buy and LA work out change from 10p. MA 20p/50/ and HA £1.00 and More able HA £1.50but I just don't feel inspired by it. Im just having a bit of a mental block and can't think of anything really exciting.

Does anybody have any ideas or any lessons they have tried on subtraction that have been really inspiring?

Thanks for reading this post!

I'm not a YR2 teacher so not my area of strengh but for your very poor and even some of your others what about role play shop scenario (Assuming you have one .. or if not improvise with a TA) Having a price tag on say 5 objects - do they have enough money - pay the shopkeeper (TA first then take it in turns) and how much change will they get. This may help your very poor children as it is practical and hands on using the actual counter coins so they will have visual reinforcement and you will be including C.C links for speaking & listening and if i were to do this you could even link it into your lesson & use mental maths to do it - e.g a child buys someting that costs 45p and only has 50p.. how much change left? Using the role play could engage the learners into thinking mentally for themselves & whoever gets it right (varying on ability questions) can have a turn being the "Shopkeeper" etc...
I know it sounds a lot to throw in alongside everything else and could be quite time consuming but IMO it is better than the old worksheets and whiteboard scenario.

Good Luck though & let us know how it goes.
