When you finish a really good book....

...there is such a wonderful feeling isn't there? I like to savour the moment and always try to be on my own with no interruptions. I like to sit and think about it for a while and go through a certain ritual - looking at the blurb again, reading the reviews, appreciating the cover....often seeing for the first time why it has the cover it does. Is anyone else the same? Today I finished A Thousand Splendid Suns and I was so emotional. I only noticed today for the first time, the shoes that the woman is wearing on the cover!

I always feel lost when I finish a book I have really enjoyed- want to keep reading and see what happens next!
I haven't read Thousand splendid suns, my friend at work bought it a while ago so I must borrow it when I see her next.
menthol

When I finish a book I've really enjoyed, I go straight back to the beginning and read it again. I read books really quickly because I'm always impatient to find out what happens next, so the second time through is almost like reading a new book because I notice all sorts of things that I must have just skimmed the first time through!

I don't often reread whole books like you do Menthol- only occasionally. But I do go back to particular bits and work out some of the connections that I might have missed.

I have books that I reread and do so fairly often and then ones that you only want to read once. Sometimes I just love to curl up with a book you really enjoy. It's funny isn't it because I don't buy DVDs as I very rarely watch a film more than once.

I like to reread parts of a book i have really enjoyed in the few days after I have finished it and check details. I will think about the story then have to go back to the book as read books too quickly to take in the descriptions etc. When i have really been engrossed in a story I feel quite bereft when it is over.

Yes I fel that sense of loss too. Also when I've finished one type of book I like to contrast it with another, e.g follow a weepie with a comedy. If I'm reading a trilogy I always leave a space and read other books in between reading each part of the three.
tui

I like to very the types of book i am reading as well. i usually have several non fiction books on the go at once as well as I only read them when i am not tired.

I know the original question was posted in the lounge not in the primary forum, but it raises some interesting questions:
We often ask children various  questions about books..... how do you go about choosing a book? Who else  would like this book?.....book review type questions etc etc, I don't think I have ever yet asked a child how they felt about finishing a book they had loved reading.......mmm have lots of things to think about now!
tui

i usd to have to buy favourite books for my children as they couldn't bear to part with them. borrowing books from the library is great to try out lots of books but i think it is important for children to own books that have touched them so they can revisit them whenever they wish. True for adults as well. I love owning books and reading on line doesn't have the same effect on me.

Totally agree Tui, if I like a book, I have to buy it.

Agree totally about reading online.... not just talking about books but part of the joy of a paper is the actuality of it, even as you're eating your toast in bed on a Sunday (bliss!!) the papers unmannagability, stretching to turn pages over....the sound they make etc, even the awkwardness is part of the joy of the paper online..... the downside for me is that  my road is considered a bit rough so I can't get the paper delivered have to get out of bed, go out buy it and then creep back into bed!..... oh for a husband/OH !!
redbutterfly

meant to say "is part of the joy of the paper "offline!!

Menthol, I'm exactly the same as you! If I love a book I have to go straight back to the beginning. I thought I was the only one!

I love the 'physicality' of reading a book too redbutterfly. I love antiquarian books but can't often afford to buy them these days. I have a very old copy of Jane Eyre by Currer Bell, fairly small, bound beautifully, thin old pages, slightly musty smell....lovely! Like stepping back in time....
jenny_pest

Im the same!! I am re-reading the Harry Potter books in preparation for the new film in July, I feel like i have never read them before!! Just finished phillsophers stone last night again and i just cannot get Potter out of my head. Im so looking forward to bedtime just to start on the chamber of secrets again!!
psycho_jo

I know exactly what you mean in your original post Smallholder. I feel like that too. I read Thousand Splendid Suns and a book like that is so powerful it stays with you for a long time.

Unfortuantely am reading a book at the mo that I'm not really enjoying (The Pirate's Daughter) and although I always say life's too short to read books you don't enjoy I want to finish it to see if it gets any better!
pink_monkey

I usually go back to particular bits as soon as I've finished but will go back to books I have loved and read them again after a while.  It's nice because it's like reading a new book but you know the characters already if that makes sense.
