what happens if you get put in Special Measures?

Hello can anyone tell me what it is like to be in a school which is in special measures?
madax1

Within about 5 mins you become an academy seems to be current trend.

Y....

Only did for a term and actually loved it.
Knew we were good and was able to show it.

However, this has lasted a yr and about to prob go back in, so will be joining u.

U do get loads of support, but very intense and morale can be low.  Even if we don't get put back in, we will have the same pressure placed upon us next year.

Oh joy of joys.

Sounds familiar CB!
We really need to be looking at what is going to have the greatest impact!!

Think the SM experience will be different now as there is very little support available in most LAs and immense pressure to go academy.
cherryblossom

Yup there is no one left in LA and the rest is a bought in service...we are advertising for a head ( current head is acting) sure they will be queuing up

will just have to wait and see at the moment no news - but can't see how we can escape the LA and Ofsted are gunning for us
tui

Oh no Cherry blossom. That sounds stressful. i hope it works out okay.

I can only tell you what it's like in mine at mo, it's very stressful and tbh I'm cracking up. We do have support but there are also a lot of knee-jerk reactions and obviously major changes to put in place.
If you do go into SM I pray you have a better experience.

Really sorry that things are looking so grim CB.
If the new head of the secondary is up for it then you could be federated so he takes overall control of both schools.
Don't know about Northants but there is still quite a lot of support being given to schools in SM in Leics (I know because we are involved in one of them).
Hope that things don't turn out too badly.

SM was a very positive move for my school. It meant that the Head got lots of support to turn things around, staff became much more focused and started to teach 'properly' again after a series of teaching and learning Insets. Some staff were moved on, others (me!) were brought in. Now we're out, it's not the end of the tale as we still need to keep accelerating pupil progress and raising expectations, but our children are amazing and showing that they can do it!
crispy

CB - so who's your head at the moment, I've not heard anything.  All we know is that we're still waiting for HMI (should have been July) to hopefully bring us out of NTI.  Apparently 3 schools in our LA got notification from Ofsted or had Ofsted this week gone but not sure who they are or the outcomes yet.

Remember you know wher I am if you want anything even if it's just coffee and moaning Wink

Out of interest, do you think most schools in special measures are there because of bad teaching, or bad leadership or something else?
madax1

Whatever the problems that bring a school to SM, leadership takes ultimate responsibility - if it's teaching, leadership hasn't tackled it; if it's poor behaviour impacting lessons, leadership hasn't put in appropriate measures; if it's pupil mobility that brings standards down, leadership hasn't done enough to encourage attendance and raise the profile of the school, etc, etc, etc.

we still have acting head at the moment bless her ... haven't had ofsted back for monitoring yet , but prob very very soon !!! argh!
probably shouldn't worry until something is concrete , we have had a fairly positive start to the new year and I am loving my class. so will just wait and see.

The problems we have are historical from past leadership !!! seems such a shame tha
t we are judged on staff that are no longer there in fact only 2 teachers who have been there in last 5 years

We were judged on this when we went into special measures and closed, very frustrating when the head had only been in post a year and several of us were new in the september but it was too late by then.

Glad to hear you are enjoying your new class xx
