Tutoring - what is the best way to find work?I am thinking of doing some tutoring as we really need the extra cash. Previously I registered with an agency who took a fee, but was wondering whether it is ok to advertise privately. Is there any reason why I shouldn't put a card up in our local shop? Or should I go through a local agency to get work?

I put a card in local shops but all my work came from the agency I registered with. Once I had work from them parents recommended me to each other.

They charge a one off fee for your advert, then all youearn is your own.

Thanks JD. Have you used them? Did you get much response?

What subjects are you willing to do? If you would be willing to do KS3 Maths for pupils that are not making good progress in KS3 you'll have a big market and I suggest you get in touch with local secondary schools with some cards with contact details on. Other than that adverts in newsagents windows are good, but most important is word of mouth, so make sure everyone knows you are doing it!

I have used a site on the internet ( not sure what it was called will look though) it was free. I had heaps of parents asking for me to tutor but I also live in an area where getting into a grammer school is a big thing so there is always parents willing to pay!

I used aplus tutors and got loads of work. I used to work in a grammar school area and had tons of enquiries but now in a different area and still have quite a few. I did put an advert in a shop window once but got no responses from that.

Ok I will look into aplus then. I would probably go for maths but not sure about going up to KS3 - I do have an A for A level maths but not sure whether I remember enough to teach that level as my shape and space was never too good. (I'm an algebra freak really)
So maybe should stick to KS2 maths.

Most of my tutoring was children taking entrance exams from Y3 up to Y6. I then got recommended by parents of pupils who passed to those who didn't. It's amazing what word of mouth can do. I had someone phone me a couple of months ago even though I gave up tutoring 4 years ago.
Once you have a couple I'm sure you'll get others easily.

Thanks RRR, I don't really want many, only one or two as I don't have the time for more. Trying out aplus for KS2 maths and will see what happens.

I would definitely use an agency to get started but then take Trinity's advice - build relationships with local schools, as they will often be asked about tutors, and some good recommendations are worth their weight in gold!
