Tui I bought this book today

A Land of Two Halves: An Accidental Tour of New Zealand by Joe Bennett - have you read it?
tui

Yeah. Joe Bennet is funny. He wrote one about travelling around the UK as well. Droll humour I think his style is called.  He often writes columns in newspapers here and magazines.

Looks like a Bill Bryson type of book. Tell me again which area of NZ you live in, then I can look on the map. Also tell me about your new avatar!

The bird is a fantail. There are lots in my garden at the moment. They are insect eaters and dart around really fast. They come close to people cause we stir up insects but it makes them seem really cheeky. They have a high ptiched squeak which can be simulated by rubbing polystyrene on glasses. Then they will come really close to check you out.

I enjoyed looking at that thanks Tui. I think the moderate climate would suit me just fine!
tui

It is good but this winter is the coldest on record for Tauranga. i don't have adequate heating for winters like this as we usually only get one or two frosts. This year we have had heaps. my agaves have been hit hard and i don't know if they will recover. we had a mild day on sunday and there were flies around! I thought at least with the cold they would have been killed off!
saying that i don't have to wear a coat or gloves so it still isn't really cold.

Tui - that is not cold!
tui

Yes but.. Rolling Eyes

Have started reading this now and am thoroughly enjoying it - I love his style and turn of phrase.

I grew up in Hamilton. And from memory he is particularly scathing about it. Haven't found a copy of the book yet to check it out. will go to the library this week if I get a chance. it closes early so I'm usually too late home.

I think I'm just coming up to that bit Tui!
tui

Smile

Finished it!

On Hamilton...

Hamilton is unique in being NZ's only substantial city that's not on the coast. Otherwise it seems short on uniqueness. Its civic motto is 'Hamilton. More than you'd expect.' which is less a motto than an admission of defeat.

Wink ....( ducks)....
tui

Very Happy Sounds familiar.
