Trick or Treat!

Will you be buying a large supply of sweets or will you be drawing your curtains and ignoring the door bell?

Have you ever said 'trick!' ? My dad has in the past and the little b*ggers took our gate off its hinges and egged the car.

Hope you have a good evening whatever you're doing Smile

Am at OHs parent's house, his mum has a big box of sweets at the front door because there is an arrangement with the neighbours children that they come round early on with parents and get sweets etc.  Our neice went round this morning (she's only 1) dressed as an orange witch, v cute.  If they are teenagers or out in the dark without adults I don't answer!

I think it is a form of bullying when teenagers do it! (Give me something otherwise I will trash your property).... at its worst that can be the underlying implication. Am happy to give sweets/fruit to children under 11/
brummie

We're going out so we haven't got to bother.

Glorified begging. (I get it from me Mom!)

I always dread halloween. We have suffered significant problems on the smallholding in the past. We had our water pipe to the cottage cut once and a few years after planting our little wood we woke up to 12 of the trees having been cut down.

Jesus I won't be answering the door. Filed a police report last night when I saw one of the hoodies threatening someone with a 'pretend' gun up his jumper last night. They also made th Turkish family re open the shop because they wantde 'fags innit'. Also they dragged a pup in front a of a car in the middle of a busy road, shouting " See this will happen to you if you don't f*** up!" I said somthing and got abused. OH told me off for getting involved. Someone has to though!!!

Crumbs, I don't know how you cope with that, PP.   Sounds like some of you have some real goings on at this time of year.   I'm with brummie, never did anything for halloween when I was a child and thankfully, not much seems to happen round here now.   Bonfire Night tends to outdo Halloween at this time of year really , thankfullly (with Halloween being an American thing more than British).   Much more fun to stand around a bonfire eating toffee apples and hotdogs and writing your name with sparklers if you ask me!

Ah but then you see on Bonfire night I worry about fireworks landing on our thatch!

.....just call me old misery!!!!Smile

i hate it! did a little party with my 3 yr old and my niece who is ten, yesterday at my niece's request. made buns and decrated them, decrated the house and did pumpkin lanterns. All just us - on our own - not bothering anyone else!
We have had eggs thrown at our house without even being asked if we want trick or treat! We're still at my mum's tonight but will go back to our house tomorrow to check it's still there and not been egged!
i wold do t or t with children i know - as someone above said - an agreement with neighbours but not with strangers - why should i!!!

Its my nieces birthday today so it's hard for her to have parties etc on the day because everyone else has plans - so we have had a nice day with just family celebrating and they (nieces & nephew) have gone trick or treating to the few neighbours just for the novelty dresesd up as 2 x disney princesses and 1 dragon!! Very Happy

I wont be opening tonight though, have just got home to mine and have nothing in to give and i refuse to give money. Usually I would be at a family party but change of plans this year.
brummie

When  I was little, nan used to have a bonfire party - usually on actual bonfire weekend rather than for halloween, but we used to have a pumpkin lantern and my auntie would make some kind of halloween cake. But I was never allowed (or even interested in) to go tick or treating - nor even dressing up as anything.

Don't mind the americans doing it, cos it's part of their culture, but I feel that here it's just another way of asda making money out of parents who can't say no to their princesses.

Right, .....relax now with a glass of white before walking round the pub and onto the curry house.
jenny_pest

I'm glad we were on hols for it as we didn't have to do this with school, it would have just took over and i'm not looking forward to news time on Monday - have a feeling there will be 26 similar stories of what they have all done!!!
redbutterfly

I've had my car window smashed twice and once was previously at Halloween, also have had chewing gum poked through the door Rolling Eyes This year they will have to be positively acrobatic to get to the top of the outside steps as I've turned the  outside lights out and it would be a bit hazardous for them to negotiate all the plant pots in the darkness, so they venture up here at their peril!! Twisted Evil and at the top of the steps I have a walled area with a low wall and a very steep drop, I would be surprised if I get any calllers this year!
wicked witch

We're not usually in and I hadn't really thought about it until reading this thread. Shan't open the door but both the cars are on the drive and it's quite open so they're a bit obvious.
redbutterfly

Just had someone ringing and knocking, hope they haven't done anything nasty to my plants as I ignored them, just heard some of them getting into a ruck with the neighbours!

I like seeing the kids dressed up and trick or treating.  I was disappointed that we've only had 3 come round and they were altogether.  I think it's sweet!  Smile  (as long as they don't "trick" when you've given them a treat!)
redbutterfly

If they are under 11, I agree it is sweet, but tonight they look over 15, I have been peeping out !! Although only one has ventured up to my flat my neighbour (downstairs) has had 9 knocks on her door so far. It is intimidating, years ago I gave some older ones fruit and sweets and they asked for money instead and got quite nasty when I said no!!
squiggle7

We went to visit some friends who had a halloween/bonfire party. Was really good fun and luckily we got back to find no tricks (OH worries quite a lot as he's a secondary teacher and we live close to his school but obviously he hasn't annoyed any of his students too much!). If we are in we tend to just switch the lights out and pretend we're not home.
cornflake girl

We went out cos it was OH's birthday. He opened the door to one and said 'oh, I thought you were the taxi we're expecting' said sorry and closed the door.
wicked witch

We didn't have a single knock on the door for which I was heartily relieved. Just had our lovely meal in peace
Rainbow_Bright

We had one pair of young children who had made a real effort with costumes and were very polite and grateful for some haribo!   Quite pleasantly surprised actually, but then I always knew this was a civilised part of the world  Wink
