Transport - where we live.

This is my topic for the first week of next term - anyone got any super creative ideas to share?

I taught this last year to yr 1 class - We did loads of things which were fantastic. The children made their own vehicles using dowel and some small wheels and a small cardboard box - it was very effective and only needed minimal adult support really and then we attached some string and the kids loved it!

We had a travel agents role play area, transport books on the topic table, children could bring in their own objects of transport e.g If they had a toy plan or something they could bring it in for topic table. We asked children and parents to bring in photos of journeys/transport that they had been on whether in the local area or not. We made postcards (postcards were around £1 for 25 in Woolies) We used the sparklebox number transport cards and put them up around the maths area.

We did a local transport survey in our local area, we used pictoragrams to represent transport and also surveyed how we travelled to school. Went for a walk around the local area and talked about what we could see, what transport we could see - including gueses on how many bus stops we thought there would be, where our nearest train station was... It was really effective and the children got alot out of it, including recount writing & such. Cross Curricular linked to history and we went to the local museum and looked at old styles of transport & made comparsions to modern transport that we use.

We made a transport dictionary - each child had to draw a picture or around a template of a vehicle and then to develop writing skills and dictionary skills, more able children could write underneath what each vehicle was and any infomation they could find about them... This was fantastic - It was A3 sized and stuck together using staples and treasury tags.

We also did a quiz - linked to Literacy, whilst on the visit around the local area - The children had to answer questions on the walk - in pairs such as can you tell me what colour the sign is at the entrance to the park? Making them more aware of their local surroundings... but it can be linked to transport.

We made a 3D classroom display of a map of local area from google & pin-pointed where everybody in the class lived & used string to connect the pin point to each child's name. This was put next to the maths survey of how we travel to school.

There was also papier mache hot air balloons that we made and the children decorated and we hung up around the classroom, junk modelling different transport that we had seen on our walk.

Also, on our walk we got on a local bus and went from one end of the road to another & back again! - this was for children to experience a bus trip as some only ever travel by car. Although there were some red tape issues around this with buses and such it was worth it.

Good Luck with this unit - there are endless amounts of topic ideas you can do for this, i will dig out my stuff from last year for some more inspiration. Used a lot of drawing templates too - this was effective for the boys mark making skills and pencil control as they liked drawing cars and colouring them in!!
