Topic on space/aliens - ideas? As title really...supposed to be covering the "local area" geography stuff but thought we could make it a bit more interesting and get some good literacy lessons out of it as well - but now the brief moment of brain activity has passed and I am stuck!
(Just read this and it sounds like our local area is on Mars or something! )

Are you doing space in science? What other topics are you doing - art, dt, ICT etc?
What literacy unit are you on? What about maths?

Have you seen The Lancashire Boys’ Writing Project?
These 2 might be of some inspiration.

oooh thanks Ebd - I was just sitting down to plan journalistic writing linked to our space topic! Perfect!
Tog - we're doing a space based topic at the mo. We started with discussion and work based around creation and evolution and the Big Bang (ambitious!), then did a week on dinosaurs, fossils and did some cave painting. Subsequent weeks have been about planets, had a debate about whether the Earth is flat or round (worked very well!), learnt about night and day, seasons, phases of the moon etc. Moving onto looking at Hubble telescope to see what is out there. Going to build mega structures as we look at what can be seen from space. Will also be making and building rockets, our own aliens...haven't quite planned the rest!
Literacy has been linked to topic. Used Outernet as text to base work on. Also done biographies on famous thinkers eg Darwin, Isaac Newton etc. Best thing we did was a guided visualisation of a trip to another planet - the writing we got from that was amazing.
Hope that gives you a few ideas!

Thanks v much for ideas
No we're not doing Space for science, but thought it would make the geography unit more fun if we were showing some alien visitors around our school and locality...
Literacy units are Non Fiction 1: "labels lists and captions", Narrative 2: "Stories from a range of cultures/stories with predictable and patterned language" and Non fiction 2:"instructions".
thanks ebd - that Lancashire stuff is great.
Psycho-jo - thanks for ideas (have a feeling some of these might be a bit beyond my Y1s though!)

Tof - a couple of the talking stories and the make a story about a planet page on here might be useful- you could then turn the focus back to earth.

Also - what about using the old Smash potato ad - as a starting point-you could make your own version. The original is bound to be on youtube.
