The Invention of Hugo Cabret

i have just read this having scrounged it off a friends child. it was recommended by WTP I think. I can't find the thread now.
it is a great book. It is very fat but maybe 3/4 of the pages are illustrations. It takes only a couple of hours to read. It has beautiful pencil drawings which are very realistic.  They givea gloomy look which suits the setting.

The fictional story line is suitable for children but the underlying theme is the early french cinema and the making of automata (clockwork animals and people..) I found the references to mythology interesting as well. Now i have to go and look up more about the early movies. Thank goodness for the internet and holidays!

thanks for the recommendation.

My mate had had this book recommended to her, but couldn't remember the title - we were googling and searching on amazon - all we had was "fat book with just pictures in"

couldn't even remember the Hugo part - there was another name we were searching for!
