The Elegance of the Hedgehog

Thought I'd start a thread.

I am about a quarter of the way through as I keep going back and re-reading as I am going along. I think I am Renee's doppleganger and an 'autodidact' too as I now have my dictionary of philosophy at the side of me as I read! Laughing  Laughing

i thought i had already posted a comment on here. I must have dreamed it. I love how Renee guards her privacy with little games- hiding her books under peasant food which she feed to her cat. I am sure the residents wouldn't care  if they knew she could read.
Have you got to the part about the french education system being based oin the cartesian system? i had to look that up.

Finished it!

Only just starting!

I'm doing terribly with it Sad think I'm just too tired to focus on such an intellectual book at the moment.  Think I'm up to p80ish and read all the phenomenology stuff and it was just too complicated.

I feel like there is an interesting and appealing story bubbling underneath but I'm just finding it hard to get to.

Keenly interested in the subject matter.  Lived in France for 10 months and my concierge was the typical one described here.  Wondering if she was secretly intellectual.

Off to bed to read more.  Does it get easier?!

On reflection, I think it was a difficult book to start our book club off with, especially at this time of year when people are so busy.
tui

Sorry!
I think you can still enjoy the story without going into all the philosophical parts. There is an interesting story bubbling underneath.

No need to say sorry - its a fascinating book and yes there is a lovely story underneath.  Smile

I agree, a bit of a challenge for our first book and for the time of year. No need to be sorry though tui, sure it'll be a great read now, or some time in the future, I'm enjoying the bits I understand! Might read it in French one day too because the reviews for the original are excellent.
