Supporting rolesI am currently supporting someone in their role as co-ordinator of a core subject. I am now doing about half the workload (data is the main thing) and getting no time/money for it. Actual co does get TLR for it. Do you think I'm doing too much for nothing at all? I'm really wanting to stay here for much longer, because although it's hard work, I generally like the school and kids. I don't want to be taken for granted though. What do people think?

Sounds rather like me! I'm being groomed to have my Leader of Department's job when he retires in 2010. It started without me having an offical job title, but about 18 months ago was made the KS2 Maths Coordinator - they didn't have this post before. Still doing that, I get no extra money, but do get 2 extra hours non-contact each week. However I think that the work split is about 75% me and 25% my leader! I have to manage 11 teachers and 5 TAs teaching/supporting Maths in KS2, he manages 2 in KS3, one of whom is me, and we're all Maths specialists in KS3. Plus I also have to sort out the Maths that happens in our nurture unit.
Happy days, roll on 2010 when I can apply for his job!

They will have to advertise it though, won't they? My concern is what happens if they decide to change their minds?

No they don't. Only DHT and HT jobs have to be advertised by law. Any other appointments can be done internally or externally without interview. If you appoint someone from external in that way they must fill in an application form but internal appointments can be made without that.

What I meant was, if there is a TLR going in the school, don't the school have to open it up to everyone at school to apply for it?

No, as Madphil said, only deputy head and headteacher jobs have to have formal advert/interview stages. Anything else in school is at the discretion of the school, e.g. in our school all adverts are posted internally on the staffroom noticeboard, and only the people meant to apply do! All our maternity covers for example only ever appear on our staffroom board, plus a copy sent direct to the person we want to do it! The school can just give it to anyone possessing the basic requirements needed for the role, i.e. QTS and suitable CRB check.
My current job role though was just given to me - I was told about it just before going into a governors finance meeting as we were about to discuss funding a new teacher to free up the time for the coordinators etc... However there would have been no-one else suitable that taught in both Yr 5 & 6 to do it.

Ok...so, I could just be given the TLR (if one were to become available...not likely!!!) without anyone else being offered the opportunity to apply??? That doesn't seem very fair!

That's correct.
It can save a lot of bother/time/money though when there is a perfectly suitable internal candidate, especially if it's just for a TLR post that has become vacant in the school.

I can understand why, but I would imagine if that happened in my school, people would be extremely peed off. I guess it's slightly different when you're teaching your specialist subject. ???

They would have no right to be peed off as the school would have done nothing wrong.
Obviously if there are a number of suitable people for a role, then they would be best advertising it internally, it allows though for someone to change position without an interview process if there is a suitable candidate in mind already (internal or external)

Yeah, guess not...just know what some people are like. anyway, not really a possibility, so don't know why I'm wondering about it so much!
