Spelling mistakes which annoy me!

Grrr!  I get really funny about spelling mistakes - anyone else?

your and you're - why don't people understand when to use these words?

their, there and they're - as above!

loose instead of lose!

I think those are my top 3!  Anyone else have any pet hates?
posingpoodle

Anything that misuses an apostrophe. Grrrrr
nicolagraham

definitely is one of mine (often see definately)!

Misuse of apostrophes is another potatoe's!!!!! Argh!
jog_on

Ha ha!  Yes, definitely...why why why?  It doesn't have an a in it, does it?
nicolagraham

No it doesn't- but is often seen with one!

I love words and spelling- addicted to word challenge on facebook but it's playing up at the moment. Might have to get the scrabble out. Mind you my OH who finds spelling tricky always wins- he plays far more tactically than me- I just like getting good words!
jog_on

Ha ha!

I used to have a problem spelling definitely until Oasis came along and then it just became easy!  Wink
nicolagraham

Yeah- you can picture the iconic CD cover and see the word! "Take a picture of the word with your mind's camera!!!" Laughing
posingpoodle

I always get definitely and definately mixed up!! Sad
jog_on

Just think Oasis and aye...(up north!!!!) and you'll be fine!
nicolagraham

Aww pp we'll let you off because you're lovely! Very Happy
jenny_pest

My pet hate is people using text language in written language and also on faceook people use WAS or WUZ rather than Nee - when using their married names.
jog_on

Yes, why do people do that?  I guess that née is a little old-fashioned, but correct nevertheless!  Grrr!
nicolagraham

My biggest hate on facebook is people seem to use a instead of I!!!! Why would you bother- it is hardly shortened is it?!

e.g. a nar (I know!)
Rainbow_Bright

I hate it when people say/write 'could of' 'would of' instead of could've and would've.

Definitely also gets on my nerves, as well as the there, their and they're.   In fact, almost all spelling mistakes get on my nerves!!!
jenny_pest

ha, RB - I still look at the top line of writing at the top of the page and think of you and laugh, because it hasn't been changed and I can imagine you rolling your eyes when you do see it especially since your rant last time!!
Rainbow_Bright

nicolagraham - text speak annoys me constantly.   I find it harder to write/read it than real English!!

JP - I can't look at the top of the page any longer, too distressing Wink
jog_on

I'd much rather send 3 text messages than use text speak.  In fact, the only shortened word I really use in texts is cos and that's because I actually say that!  Sad

Kindred spirit!

My youngest always used to use text speak on MSN, but for the last couple of years, she and her group of friends have decided that it's very uncool to use txt and always use correct spelling and punctuation as far as possible (she's 1Cool, so the pendulum seems to have swung the other way for them.
I also get annoyed about apostrophes, but I'm not too worried about spelling.  My older daughter, although very bright in many ways, is a useless speller and it was a constant worry for her when she was younger.  She worked really hard on it but has never been able to 'see' spelling patterns at all.  Think she's probably slightly dyslexic, but it's never really held her back so we never bothered trying to get a diagnosis.  But it's made me realise that poor spelling is not always just sloppiness.
jog_on

Yes, I agree that poor grammar is worse...but some people should just learn the correct way to spell certain words.  Obviously there are some people who can't, but I think there are many more people who have the ability, but just can't (or should that be carn't!!!!?????!!!) be bothered!
Chilli Queen

I once saw a classroom display which read 'Who's house is this?'
Rainbow_Bright

I saw one once entitled 'How many current buns?' ...
jog_on

Ha ha to both of those!

Teachers in my school come and query their spellings and grammar before putting up displays.  It makes my hands feel funny sometimes when I see bad mistakes in school!
jenny_pest

Theres a class in my school with a Literacy Display up without an E in Literacy, we had a staff meeting in there and I just sat staring at it - nobody else noticed it as it wasn't the display in front of everyone and I told the class teacher at the end who was mortified and took the whole thing down that night!
nicolagraham

Jog_on I see that spelling of can't (carn't) on facebook all the time and I can't get over it!!!!

We sound like the spelling police!!! Laughing
Sniggle

the use of 'of' REALLY bugs me.  could of, should of...HAVE!!!  Twisted Evil  Twisted Evil  Twisted Evil

But there are times when I think about good use of language. For instance, I often here newsreaders saying Goodbye from Joe and me.  I was always taught to say I.

That's an interesting one, sniggle.  From Joe and me is actually correct because of the use of from.  You wouldn't say 'From I' because from isn't followed by the nominative case.  You would say, 'Joe and I send our best wishes' though, because then Joe and I are the subject of the sentence instead of an object.
Sniggle

Far too confusing for me RB. It just doesn't sound right!

Ha ha!  We can forgive silly mistakes Razz
brownbear

I'm smiling at someone's contribution here - it's obviously easier to spot someone else's mistakes than your own!
Your and you're; definitely; and disappointed are my biggest bugbears. Actually, all mistakes are, but that's probably the teacher in me! It's worse when you see them on here. You have to excuse the odd mistake on a forum where people are often typing in a hurry, but to consistently get something wrong when you're a teacher - NO!
jog_on

Was it me?  Did I spell something incorrectly?  eeek!

If it were me, I'd like to know if I were doing something wrong!
Sniggle

Eeeek ....hangs head in shame Sad  Sad
wotton

I'm a hopeless speller, so excuse any mistakes, but I often consult my dictionary and word book. Some of it is to do with never really being taught the rules and why some words are spelt the way they are. I also got really nervous in spelling tests because no matter how much I tried I could not get them correct on test day......had really scarey teachers in the 60's. Then they decided that it would be good not to teach grammar.....the rest is history!
smallholder

The saying 'Let he who is without sin cast the first stone' comes to mind here. I shall not be casting any! Smile
greyengine

Think it's fine really to make the odd mistake when on the forum.  We're all probably typing hurriedly and we are amongst (very forgiving) friends.
sal 26

effect/affect confusion from teachers - but I usually bite my tongue - thought I'd make an exception as you've devoted a thread to it!
nicolagraham

I am always terrible with practice/practise when writing reports. Really have to concentrate on that one!
brownbear

Not you Jog on - sorry - I should have kept my mouth shut/ hands still! I didn't mean to spread paranoia (yes, I did have to look that one up!)
It's just with your and you're that it's such an easy one to get right - you know whether you're saying 'you are' or not.
Anyway, we'll all be spelling like the Americans soon with everyone relying on microsoft spell check (not that there's anything wrong with that peeceee and ebd!).
brownbear

The same one for me Nicola! I had worked on a spelling information sheet for parents really late one night and realised the next morning when I checked it that I'd got the wrong practice - luckily I realised before it went out!
nicolagraham

One of my colleagues hates it too- so much so that she completely avoids using it in reports unless she really has to! Laughing

Funny how spelling makes us feel isn't it? So many things to think about when writing though!
trinity0097

Sexey/Sexy - but that's not going to annoy most people unless you work in one of 2 schools in the country!
jog_on

I didn't start this to have a go at anyone, honestly.  I apologise if it has offended anyone...I was just saying how some words make me feel!

Sad
queenlit

Independant makes my blood boil. I have often seen it in reports, ieps etc.

It depends where in the sentence you're saying it, sniggle.   If you think about it, you'd never say 'Sarah got a letter from I' so it's not right to say 'Sarah got a letter from Joe and I'    BUT if you said 'Joe and I went to town, it's correct, rather than Joe and me went to town (you'd never say 'Me went to town' either!)

As for mistakes on forums, I know I make my fair share when I typing too quickly or just not paying attention properly.   That's why I love the 'edit' button on this forum!!!
gorgeous51

I hate spelling mistakes and the misuse of apostrophes, but some mistakes really make me laugh - for instance someone on here earlier put that they were going to calve a pumpkin!  That conjured up a really funny picture in my head of a pumpkin giving birth to a baby cow pumkin!!!!!!!!
jaybee baybee

Re practice/ practise - I was taught that practICE is a noun as is ICE, and therefore to practISE is the verb.  I hope this is correct!
Poppy_Red

OOooh!  I hate the 2's, as in
to/too/two
when used in the wrong place - this always leaps off the page to me and smacks me between the eyes lol x
greyengine

With practise/practice, I always think of advise/advice which is much easier to remember as they're said differently too.
wotsitagain

Lots of my own bugbears mentioned here.  I used to be brilliant at spelling, but I find I have to concentrate now with some words.  I am known at school for being a pedant though.  I too dislike misplaced apostrophes especially in things like TAs and SATs when they are the plurals, not indicating ownership.  Also don't like amount/number and fewer/less being confused.

I did have a snigger recently though when we had a note on the board at school about the Year 6 Leaver's disco.  I know we had bad year group last year, but banning 80+ children?

Oh no! I've never been able to get my head around this one- at one point I though effect was the noun and affect the verb- that's not correct is it?! Embarassed
shinygoldenlady

Was in a cafe yesterday- meal served with 'vegetables and potato's)-grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!
smileylady

Freshley made sandwitches appears outside a local eatery here! (no it's not a Halloween play on words)
shinygoldenlady

Haha- quite like the idea of a sand-witch!!  Creepy!!
Rainbow_Bright

I get really annoyed with menus and brochures with spelling mistakes on them.   Why don't people spend a bit more time and money on getting them checked before they fork out to have them printed?   I am even less tolerant of this, in this, the age of the computer spellchecker!
choccat

We have a male teacher in our school who is hopeless at spelling and constantly gets words wrong. I cover his PPA time and it drives me mad when I walk into his classroom and see LOs and SC spelt incorrectly.

We use flipcharts for most lessons and one day it read:

Starter: Revise Propertys of triangels.

LO: Continue with column addition.

I immediately switched off the projector told the children to write out their 7 times tables while I fixed the mistakes. It was actually quite difficult for me to spell them incorrectly on here!! But he seems to think it doesn't matter. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Twisted Evil  Twisted Evil  Twisted Evil
80s chick

I have a real thing about spelling (and grammar too if truth be known).  For the last 3 years the majority of the children have come up from KS1 spelling all plurals with apostrophes. e.g The girl's (ie more than one of them) went out to play.  Aaaaargh!!!! The girl's what went out to play?    Mad  Mad  Mad

Someone must be teaching them this but I've no idea who it is so find it's like banging my head against a brick wall at times.  I tell them not to use an apostrophe at all if they're not sure, rather than put it in the wrong place.

Rant over - deep breaths - I fink!!!! (there's another pet hate)

I'm going to psych myself up for Harry Hill now.
bscaca

All of my pet hates have been mentioned here already. The one which my class ( not SEN)  write most frequently which irritates me is 'whent'; they are in Year 6!! I don't know how many times i have mentioned this but i suspect they can't be bothered as that is the prevailing attitude in my class. Is there no hope?
fccwidow

yes my yr 4 s are doing lots of whent and whith ! so I sent home HFW for Yr1 and 2 home to do in hols !
