Short storiesCan anyone recommend some good books of short stories. I need something to read in the car when I turn up early to schools. Short stories are good because I get carried away with novels and could miss the appointments completely!

Not short stories exactly, but the Scotland Street books by Alexander McCall Smith are written in very short chapters which are pretty much complete in themselves - I think he wrote them originally to be published in installments in a newspaper.

I would also recommend you try poetry for this sort of situation. I read poems in hospital waiting rooms or waiting for other appointments as I can't settle to anything longer. The collection-
Staying Alive: real poems for unreal times ed Neil Astley - is a wonderful anthology or 'Poems on the underground' ed Gerard Benson, Judith Chernaik & Cicely Herbert.

Thanks for the ideas. I didn't think of poetry and I've got lots of poetry books.
