Sharing information with parents

know lots of schools send home topic web type leaflet each term or half term but wondered if anyone had anything they thought was particularly effective at sharing learning with parents as dont think weve got this right

We have school planners which have the children's individual targets written in them for each half term, we send out termly newsletters with general info and learning infomation on for each class.

I know a school who does a learning afternoon. Once a term they invite parents/grandparents etc into school from 1:30pm onwards and each class has an open afternoon, the parents get chance to walk and look around the classes and hear talks from the children about what they have learnt about and then the teacher will talk about what they are learning next term. The kids love getting involved in showing off their work and use displays, the hall etc to show what they have learnt. The PTA have a stall in the hall too to buy things the kids have made and this works well. The parents generally enjoy it because lots of them will be coming to pick up around 3pm ish anyway so will either just come earlier or stay until 4pm and have chance to see exactly what goes in school without the formality of it being a parents evening. Its just an open afternoon and it's not about targets or anything - it is about showing people what the kids can do and will do. I think its a nice idea honestly.

We send out topic leaflets at the start of each new topic, then send topic books home for a few days at the end of the half term with a form stuck in for parents/children to comment on the topic.  We also have parents in to watch phonics each term and we have an environment week and an outdoors maths week each year with parents invited to watch/take part in lessons.

Had my phonics sessions last week -really good feedback and loads of parents attended.

Very Happy

liking these ideas thank you

We do the usual thing of sending home a letter detailing topics and how parents can help.
We have also just had open maths lessons in each class for parents to come and watch how maths is taught. We have had very good feedback from parents about how useful they have found these, particularly from parents with children in KS2.

sounds good, think staff need confidence to do this though

The staff do need confidence Bluerose - I was scared last week when the parents came in to watch phonics, but it is so useful.  One of my parents (who I was a bit worried about when I first met her - looked a bit chellenging!) came to watch my phonics and when I was talking to her later, she said it was the first time she had sat in a classroom since she was 12!  She said that she was worried about her son starting school cos her memories of it were so negative, but that we had managed to convince her that school was actually fun!

I think as long as you give staff plenty of notice and they are allowed to do something different - perhaps maths outside or something - where the parents can be actively involved, then everyone will benefit.

Quite agree gorgeous just think some staff will find this harder than others
