Redesigning ICT curriculum

Our current ICT curriculum is very outdated, based on all the QCA documents and we're finding it's really not suitable for our children, who pretty much all have computer/internet access at home now.

We are looking to redesign the curriculum, particularly for KS2 and I would like to move away from teaching them how to use specific programs, most of which they won't use beyond primary school, and develop something that will prove useful to them in the future. If you could redesign ICT what would you say were the must haves/must dos?

Snap! We are trying to thik along these lines. Very hard as such varying teacher confidence. I like Kent grid but was thinking along the lines of jeronstrating points (an art scheme) where you state that children must have access to different expereinces and then leave it more to the teachers as to how they will do it (with suggestions/ sample lessons for less confident teachers). So communication would be a skill but teacher could choose word, power point, publisher... would also be good for children to have say in what they use so transferable skills need to be taught & then they need to be shown how to apply these.
Another idea we had (though I think the idea came from here) was non-negotiables as I am fed up with having to teach children how to log on or save work. Although this may be more a KS1 thing.

I love ICT but so stressed with it as everything falliung to pieces.  Already spent 20 grand this yr on repairs etc.  
Trying to plan a lesson on file sharing!  Kind of got it but been at it now for a couple of hours!  
Producving radio scripts / broadcasts and want them to produce background music so need to download copyright free music.  Just takes so much time!  Hazving groups use easy speak mikes to go round and interview chn about school goings on etc to get direct quotes.  Eventually want them to produce written script and then radio script on comps.  Guess I need to get audacity sorted in my head too and then possibly compose their own music using 2 simple software??

Im just in a mess with what I want to do grrrrrr!

These days I think you need to look at teaching pupils how to use ICT to enhance other subjects, rather than teaching it as a discreet subject in its own right.
As we teach IPC where its all more or less done for us, I haven't had to do an ICT revamp, but if I did I'd start by looking at what the kids can already do, what NC says they should do, then look at how ICT fits into the rest of the curriculum and plan it that way.

The way I teach and plan ICT is linked to different subjects throughout the year. With younger pupils skills are introduced during ICT sessions so that they can be built on in class. With older pupils it's more about extending the curriculum. The class teacher has to attend the ICT session so that they are aware of what pupils can do and what I'm covering - that way they can extend the use of ICT in the classroom more easily.

I think the mixture of teaching it discretely while embedding it across the curriculum works really well for us.

Obviously in Wales we have a different SoW to follow with our own outcomes. The skills based curriculum also helps - ICT is one of the key skills
