question markshiya, was wondering if anyone has any good ideas how to make sure my children use question marks consistently? just been marking writing assessments and very few use them for all questions at any level.
i have y5-range from about 2C to high 3A and have already done some input on them and a variety of morning work and homework tasks to practice......thanks

I have this difficulty too - I wonder why children seem to think question marks are rationed!? To overcome this I:
* teach why question sentences work so well across the different genres & the effectiveness of these in 'hooking the reader in';
*specifically praise - put up examples of (ideally their) good writing which DO include question sentences;
* highlight use of questions (especially those addressed to the reader) when we read our class story;
* targets: ask those children who are on the specific target to include question and exclamation sentences to underline where they have done so in each piece of work (ideally cross-curricular because then you know they've really got it);
* follow up: after I have marked their writing, I ask those children who are on a target, but have not done so, to come up with three question/exclamation sentences that they could have used

I would also check that they know the difference between a question and a statement - many don't! I do sorting activities of sentence cards for this. I also give them answers and then get them to come up with possible questions for them.

I agree! In fact, it is well worth finding out if they know what a sentence is! Many have no idea at all!
