PRoject X - or something else?HAd project X rep in tonight - she was terrible. Coloured our vision of the resources, as she didn't have a clue.
We want to buy something to improve under-acheiving boys (which is why we looked at project X). Does any other school use it or other things that they could recommend?

I'd recommend Fast Lane as a good, age-appropriate catch up scheme. Definitely appeals to our boys (& girls). Each book comes with a mini-CD which the children have loved too.

I had the rep call on me today howvever she thrust the books at me and said I'll leave them with you and give you a ring back in a couple of weeks, you dont need to buy them but can keep the samples bye!
Not really making me want to buy them! Plus not impressed with the graphics. I like the graphic novels.

We had a sample box but no one was impressed and thought they were expensive. I am trialling Scholastics OUt of The World manga style books with my poor Year 6 readers, They like them but I'm less keen.

the project x would be over £5000 and you don't actually get that many books. Each CD ROm is £175 each, and you need one for each year group. Seems a bit excessive to me!

We've got two series of Rapid readers - also aimed at underachieving boys, though they appeal to all the children (including the more able ones - they like the jokes at the end of each story!) They are 6 levels broadly covering level 2. They had a real impact on our weaker readers' interest in reading. Each book has a non-fiction and fiction half roughly using the same vocab and they're phonics based (but with extra relevant words listed at the start of each story/booklet so they can be introduced by an adult prior to reading). We haven't got the ICT resources that go with it, so can't say what they're like, but I'd definitely recommend the books.
I've not seen project X in detail, but didn't personally much like the illustrations that I've seen, though that doesn't mean the children wouldn't like them. We've got one sample book that they seem to like.

We ordered Project X almost two months ago with the promise it would be with us in about a week. Haven't seen or heard anything since. Will be chasing it up next week. It did look like it would appeal to our less enthusiastic readers, but until we actually receive the resources I cannot comment further.

essex grid for learning do a project called Nerva, which I've just had the flier for. It looks good (but not reading books as such) haven't looked into it yet. Plan to at some point but if you beat me to it let me know!

Project X has arrived!!!!!!!!!
Have only had a brief look to be honest, and only at the Y6 stuff. Have taken home the teacher's giude and one non fiction book to flick through. Looks ok and I think my class (esp. boys) will like it. The layout of the non fiction reminds me a bit of SATs comprehensions.
The ongoing 'soap' like them of the fiction books plot could be a good thing or bad thing depending on whether individual kids like it or not. If they don't, then the poor things are stuck with it until Y6 anyway. We'll see how it goes.
I don't like the fact that there's no differentiated test. Rigby Navigator, for example, offers books on two levels, whereas Project X only has one.
Will start to use it next week probably and try to complete one non fiction book before Christmas. Should be fun - haven't done proper guided reading for a while...

We've got project X. Generally (and this is a general comment) the boys really like them and the girls can't stand them. I find them truly tedious to listen to the children reading them (particularly the non fiction which are so uninspiring).

Showed it to the kids today and they really ike the look of it. Lots of positive comments, especially from the boys. Will start reading next week - the insist on fiction.
