Primary Languages

If you could have ONE thing to help you deliver primary languages with ease, what would it be?

(You're not allowed to choose a specialist language teacher!!!)

Rigolo

Pronunication Help - how you sound and say things out and how they should sound. (Whether it is a CD/IWB activity)

Thanks x

Have you seen Teachers Learn French?  (I think that's what it's called anyway!)

Thanks x

It gives total support to those teachers who lack confidence, especially with pronunciation - a virtual teacher (who can be turned off if you don't need her) - a cartoon family and dragon that the pupils love - interactive resources - flashcards - lots of repetition.  It is definitely the reource that is used most in our school.

Thanks Chrissie! x

If I think about having to teach Spanish where I have no expertise then 2 things would help
1. Sound files and pictures so you can touch the smartboard and then here the sound.
2. ideas to follow up teaching the vocab- e g
bingo
say it in a different voice
picture search around the room
match the pairs
having tables called by new vocab
guess what I am thinking of
noughts and crosses
singing the vocab
etc

It takes so long to learn new vocab- I am trying to do so in Spanish so know what it feels like. Loads of repetition, combining with old vocab is needed.

Thank you both for the suggestions!

I'm trying to make PL as easy as possible for everyone else in school.

I feel the same TT. I have lots of ideas but really wnat to get the pronunciation right (I learned French and some German at school so would feel happier with either of those !)
I bought Rigolo for Y5/6 teachers and the children love it ! and the Y5 teacher who was petrified of teaching a language loves it too !

Useful!

We use Catherine Cheater and we have powerpoints for every lesson with sound files for each word and phrase, they're brilliant. I think they were produced by someone from Northants.
kesunder

for those who are less confident with their teaching of language-Early start.

Thanks so much everyone - really useful information x

I am the MFL subject leader in my school and have just bought Rigolo 1 to be used. The teachers absolutely love it as do the kids. As somebody else pointed out having the virtual teacher to help you is fantastic especially for those who are less than confident.

One thing that i have done is too create a MFL folder on our shared area. In there i have put anything to do with MFL that i have come across; displays, powerpoints and worksheets.

Hope that helps.

Thank you!

Out of interest, which LA are you part of?  MFL is a term which has become defunct apparently, but it seems as though we're not in the company of very many other schools using PL!
senorcalvo

I'm part of Lewisham. To be honest i have not heard about it being called Primary Languages. I shall have to investigate.

I often wonder how much these people who decide which terms are acceptable get paid for making such important decisions. I get the feeling that it will be rather more than my salary.... but there again, I only teach kids.
Rainbow_Bright

MFL is definitely not defunct in my LA, jog_on!   In actual fact, I've never heard anyone else use any other term apart from you and it took me a while to work out what PL meant in your profile.   Strange, indeed!
jog_on

Ha ha!

We were told that it had been decided against the foreign part because of the fact that we have many community languages and they can be the languages taught in schools.

I just wondered...wasn't having a go at anyone!
Rainbow_Bright

God, that's so blimmin politically correct, isn't it!!!

No offence taken here, and certainly none intended on my part, I just think it's another hilarious example of how the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing in education!!
kesunder

we are meant to use PL too now!
