Powerful BooksJust finished Kate Grenville's 'The Secret River'. Wow what a book! Was shortlisted for the Booker in 2006. The main story is about a convict and his family and their transportation to Australia and settlement in New South Wales. With themes of identity and belonging and wonderful descriptions of landscape, man and nature it is so well written. The ignorance, arrogance and brutality shown towards the native aboriginal people is not shied away from - neither is their response to the settlers. The ending is so compelling but shocking and hard to read. I would really recommend this one.
Anyone else like to add any 'powerful' books they have read?

Broken by Daniel Clay- really makes you think about society today and the knock on effects events can have on each other. A fascinating story.

The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness. It's the first of a trilogy and is about a boy running away from his community and learning about them and their lies as he goes. It is brilliantly written and the ending is....well, I NEED the second book to be published NOW!
