How do you use a place value display? I'm rubbish at maths and last year taught them that the decimal jumps when x or divide by 10, 10  etc Embarassed so I feel that a PV display will improve my ability to teach this but how do you use it?  Gosh what an embarrassing question... maths just wasn't taught this way when we were kids, still learning so much.

HHC - every year I discover how much more I've got to learn about teaching maths!  Especially the past year when I started the MaST course.  The way I see it, as a teacher you never stop learning and you can only aquire a certain amount of knowledge each year.  Just think how much you've learnt in the past year, and celebrate that rather than feeling bad about how much you don't know.

Re using a p/v display, I think the important thing is to make sure that children see the pattern in numbers.  So I'd have a p/v display but if space allows also a Gattengo chart (google for it!).  Each child would also have their own p/v chart (ie the HTU etc headings on columns) so that they can write the numbers into the correct columns.  Then as they x or divide they can see the numbers moving across and zero the hero jumping into action as a place holder.  Hope all that makes sense!  The main thing, as I say is to help children see that zeros don't appear at random and there is a simple pattern they can follow.

Aah, an excellent reply, thanks so much. Yep, I do feel really good about how far I've come since last year-have been looking at my prep notes and plans from this time last year and I knew so little.

Your PV explanation is brilliant thank you. Love Zero the Hero, gonna have him on my wall. Think at Year 4 this is fundamental knowledge so going to have a PV display and use it!

No need to be embarassed about asking a all HHC Very Happy And you have a great explanation there from KR.

Having the children sitting on chairs with numbers on their tops and having them physically jump the numbers too is something I have found really useful  Smile My PV display is one of the only display (other than the Literacy Working Wall) that I am absolutely convinced the children actually use Laughing I see them looking at it and physically bobbing their heads as they imagine the numbers jumping across Razz

That's great SGL.  I'm going to buy this CD to use in class and has a great song about numbers jumping too which will link well with the PV display.

I have hats some of the children wear (just strips of sugar paper, with H/T/U etc stapled to the front) and they pass the numbers along the line to each other.  I also have the whole class stand behind their chairs, imagine they're a number and then jump the right number of places to the right or left, depending on the instruction I give (ie you are 77 - multiply yourself by 100 - jump, jump - what number are you now?)
wicked witch

I like that idea KR Very Happy

Obviously, not my own ideas, but all teaching is theft!!!!

Happy to share x
queenie80

the last few pages with the numbers are to hang underneath the main poster bit if that makes sense. There should be nine pages shown at the bottom.

Just edited adn re-attached with 9 pages on x

I had a go at a football one - www.instantdisplay.co.uk/pvfootball.pdf and www.instantdisplay.co.uk/pvfootballa5.pdf for smaller ones.
Think it should look reasonable displayed as a banner but please let me know if you have any suggestions on how to improve it.
I'll have a play with some race car type ones tomorrow.
