nightime animals - any ideas?Im doing a topic on light and dark in nursery. Starting to look at planning for next week, but am struggling for ideas. Our focus for the week is day/night animals. The only thing I have got down is to sort them.... not very exciting! Can anybody share their ideas please? Many thanks in anticipation!

AnimalsWhat about doing black and white painted pictures on card, even do a pretend "sleepover" (theres a barney episode- My niece has it on video and watches it constantly!!) where the children have a cup of warm milk, all bring in their pyjamas and listen to the night animals - use your IWB maybe and watch a video or such about the animals and see if you can get hold of some tapes with animal noises on and listen to the music and sounds of what animals you can hear? Just a thought as i sit and eat my dairy milk shortcake moose

day and night planningWe have discussions during circle time whether the moon is out during the day or night and so on.When we are ready for our work projects...we use a large piece of paper which we paint light blue, then on the diagonal we glue on a large black triangle. Basically the page is half blue, half black. Then offer a selection of pictures or shapes...Yellow Sun, White Crescent Moon, Stars, varying animals, people awake and beds etc. I use a combination of paste or stickers. We ask the children where the pictures belong. They decide if the moon goes on the blue(day) side or the black(night) side. I have threes so I keep it fairly simple, not too many variables. If they are capable, we let them cut and color their own pictures but mostly we do this for them. The learning aspect is for them to overcome the desire to paste things anywhere and to actually sort and put them where they belong. They may need coaxing to get it correctly, however I never stop them from putting it where they choose. It must be their choice. We often have the moon rise in the morning along with the sun! Some children at this age get very upset when they have no control over the subject, others are very particular about getting it right. This is a combination project which is teacher and child directed. This activity allows for more child interaction then a preprinted activity sheet, consider the age of the child then see how much they can be involved in the preparation. I have even allowed more capable children to cut the black triangle to glue on the blue painted page, as well as cut and color all the pieces to glue on the "day and night" perspective. I hope this helps feed your imagination. Sometimes one idea from someone else can spark several of your own! |

We use a book called Day Monkey/Night Monkey in Year 1 (Autumn Term.) I'm sorry but I cannot remember the author.
The two monkeys talk each other through what they can see during the day/night. Might be a useful start point for you. |
