hee hee , yeah i had 2 jars on investigation in the cupboards plus i like it...

Hubby and I had chilli last night, I bulked it out with a can of baked beans and lots of onion so enough for tonight which we are having with jacket potato and salad.

Why don't you post what you have in your freezer/cupboards that you can't think what to do with and we can suggest things?
cherryblossom

yeah thats a great idea! will do when i run short of ideas
jenny_pest

I'm the same cherry, need to eat up what I have before i go spending again, I have such boring eatting habits - I will investigate whats in the freezer and cupboards too, have some carrotts and potatoes that need eating later so it may be then and some ham & gravy for tea Smile Yum!
cherryblossom

sounds good , i found an old bag of quorn mince so i am having mince and dumplings for tea!! yum, got no tatties though , but will make do without ..anyway that means i can have extra dumpling yum!
jenny_pest

mmmm dumplings... do you make yours or do you use frozen?
Rainbow_Bright

I've done this before, and really want to get back into it ready for the start of term.  Saved us a fortune on food and we made sure we cooked things we wouldn't have otherwise.

Peanut butter is a no go for me though, can't stand the stuff!  I have been forced to allow marmite in the house as OH gets withdrawal symptoms if he doesn't have it for breakfast.  A huge 500ml jar lasts about 3 weeks....  it's quite scary!

Today: bigos for dinner

Tomorrow - homemade smoothie for breakfast
cous cous salad for lunch (probably)
dinner might be bigos again or I might do a sausage casserole

Friday - cereals and fruit for brekkie
lunch - salad or soup
dinner - beef and black bean sauce

Planning to make big veggie chilli, lasagne (with or without meat) and a load of pasta sauce to put in the freezer this next week ready for the September onslaught.  If OH ends up getting the Netherlands contract he's looking at, I'll be home alone 4 weeks at a time and am quite likely to live on toast for the whole time if nothing is done ready.  I love cooking, but not when it's just me....
trinity0097

bigos???
Rainbow_Bright

It's in another thread somewhere - the 'Rainbow Bright Countdown one, I think'.  My grandma is Polish and it's a Polish meat and cabbage stew.  Bit like German sauerkraut but with more things in it - onions, pork, sausage, mushrooms.  I've had the sauerkraur for a year or more and finally got round to making a vat of the stuff the other night.  Not everyone's cup of tea by any means but I really like it, taste of Poland for me.  Going to freeze it now and save it for easy meals and some to take to my grandma when I next see her.

i made  the dumplings myself it was actually quite tasty.
today i hade the leftovers ( i did pop to the shops and get some potatoes and carrots to go with it)

brekki was weetabix
bscaca

I always meal plan for evening meals and shop accordingly.
Tonight it is Chicken Paprika with rice and salad
Saturday: Lasagne and Salad
Sunday: Roast dinner
Monday: Pasta Bake
Tuesday: Savoury mince with savoury scones
Wednesday: Summer vegetable Risotto
Thursday: Pork chops with glazed apples
Friday: Orange glazed chicken

I sometimes swop things around but keep to those meals for the week until i next shop
Rainbow_Bright

Impressive, bscaca.

At my Mum's the other week, my great auntie did her Chicken Paprika, yummy!   We eat it with pasta (what they do in Poland where my auntie's from) but it's the sauce, it's just delicious!

OH often doesn't know from one week to the next whether he'll be at home or working away so it can be a bit difficult for us to plan meals.   I'm beginning to get some good things in the freezer ready for Sept though.

well just had a little bowl of instant noodles last night and then today was invited to my friends for bfreakfast which was a fry up (well grill up) so that saved us money, havent thought what to make for tea as not hungry yet, might have pilchards on toast or something..
tomorrow have been invited to inlaws for a bbq so thats good...am going to make some scones as have some jam and strawberries to eat up as well as some cream knocking about.
my friend ( who did the brekkie) is popping over for elevenses and i will take the rest to in laws!
cherryblossom

he scones look quite good and i have also made some cookies and some fairy cakes
my friend has had to cancel on me so will have to take the stuff round to inlaws instead! might have some tonight though!
tui

i always cook enough for leftovers so I don't cook a different meal each night like you do bsaca. sometimes I freeze one portion of the extra and other times I will box up portions to take for lunches.
when my son was living at home he absolutely hated having leftovers so I would freeze the extra and serve it up the next week and he was none the wiser!
now he is cooking for himself he is glad of leftovers!
smallholder

I'm the queen of leftovers here too Tui!
squiggle7

Leftovers save me from having soggy sandwiches for lunch! I really wish I could be organised to plan meals but I am just useless.
cherryblossom

i am often the envy of the staffroom with my leftovers!! hee hee , mind you i have occasionally had school dinners as they are free, ( not very nice though) then i have the leftovers for tea.... i always make too much and my husband is very fussy so end up cooking just for me usually
cherryblossom

sausgae casserole with lentils and tomatoes tonight! in the slow cooker all day, just need to add some seasoning when i fancy it!
trinity0097

Our left over roast chicken from last night is going to be chicken curry in an hour!  Smile
Rainbow_Bright

Yay!  OH's Mum has invited us around for tea again tonight.  Our chicken curry can wait for tomorrow.  Smile
trinity0097

Well done Smile

We never have dinner at in-laws only ever lunches, but FIL can't eat big meals in the evening, so we have to have big meals at lunch if we invite them round or we go to them.  Mind you I think this is actually the way to go, as I feel so much fuller and don't need to eat as much in the evening as I would have had for lunch!  But big 3 course meals with a snooze after aren't exactly easy when you're a teacher in term time! Wink
Rainbow_Bright

Eating a big breakfast and lunch is the way to go if you want to lose weight as well.   During term I'm lucky to get a decent lunch, though, and dinner is usually quite late.  Not ideal, so I'm trying to get things in the freezer before we go back.

I always cook double portions of everything and freeze half. It's so handy when you really can't be bothered to cook, just to be able to pull it out and stick it in the microwave.
Just found this http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipe...t-summer-vegetables-and-chickpeas and have all the ingredients in the freezer or in tins so will definitely make it sometime.
JD1970

I love planning properly for meals. OH says he prefers sponanaity (he can't spell it either).

Have you seen Economy Gastronomy? Its all about planning sensibly.
