Levelling Writing - how long does it take you?

As the title says really - how often do you level children's writing and how long does a class set of writing take you?
I'm feeling a bit depressed about how much time I seem to spend on this but can't see a way of speeding up and still feeling that I have done a satisfactory job.
Thanks

Ages!

Absolutely ages!

And is it worth it?

That's waht I was going to say.  Do you need to level it?  Can't you just see what they need to do to get better and address that in your teaching, whether whole class, groups or individuals?
Sniggle

We do it half termly to get targets but it takes bloody ages!!

It takes me forever.  Far too long.  We do it properly twice a year - October & February for all the children plus we now have our selected 6 APP children per class where writing evidence is being taken from a range of subjects.  Such a shame I don't have a class this term...
dillsage

I timed doing APP recently - took about 20 minutes per child - so that's 2 hours to do 6 benchmark children.  Then do the 'estimate where everyone else is in the gaps between' bit (how on earth can you reliably place eg a 2a/3c borderliner without looking in detail? - but if it isn't reliable we're messing around with performance management data...

Don't get me started!
Hate the ads by the way.  May have to revert to the other place?  Though I do understand that the money has to come from somewhere.

Ugh - FLASHING ads!

I can give it a level in about one minute, then have to spend 30 minutes moderating, only to find I was right to begin with.

It takes me ages also. It's what I spent yesterday doing to only discover some children didnt give me their work, plus the 2 children who were away. Will need to spend more time doing it next week, grrrrr.

AGES!! have spent most of today doing it and my ppa last week......we do a big piece every half term and seem to be constantly levelling and target setting.

I really don't spend long on it.  As others have said, the time is taken on feeding back the positives and the things to work on.

Lots of these responses seem to be referring to levelling individual pieces of work rather than doing APP over a range of work (not just English)?  Is that what most people are doing/are expected to do?

not too long until recently, we had our own set of APP like criteria which we've just changed to include the APP ones - now instead of me quite liking levelling and target setting I find I am constantly trying to work out what the APP criteria speak means and hate the negative ones....why look for negatives?

We level every child every half term, alternating fiction and non-fiction.  Takes ages, but I haven't taught Literacy until this year for a couple of years so feel really out of practice.

I read through a child's work and ususally can tell what level it is but then go through Ros Wilson's criterion scale to prove it -  I am always right!

It takes me 15mins to level, give two positives and a target for each child using th APP grid - we use APP for every child but focus on 4 AFs every half term - but I take the other AFs into account.
So, several hors to do a whole class, and I teach two different classes english -that's nearly 60 books!
It's been worth while though.

prob about 20 mins per child. Level every child using APP for writing each term using 4-6 pieces of writing from across curriculum. Find it takes less time than marking QCA writing tests and gives a far more accurate level, not skewed by the task or the day it was done on.

About 5 mins - the more you do it the faster it gets.

You get a gut feeling about which sheet to do then whizz through what is on them. Moderating shows I am OK at this. Half termly is too infrequent to allow you to build up familiarity and speed!

We have started with APP - as I started last year, the school was just finishing using the old grids, so I started with APP. I have a sheet for each child as find this easier to do - then I can see where the gaps are for each individual as I feel that one child at a 2c is different to another at 2c.

We do independent write after every unit so aim to have 2/3 per term. I have done one so far and due to do another next week. Everything in this book is independent. After each piece, I mark it quickly and highlight bits that stand out, so then when come to use 2/3 pieces for APP I can see at a glance what stands out.

It takes about 3- 3 and half hours. I will get quicker!! (hopefully)
