King arnold maths prob

Doing equiv with Year 6.
Just changing it to Roald dahl books.

Know there is 6 possibilities for 3 books and 24 for 4 books.

ALSO KNOW THAT FOR 5 BOOKS it would be 1 x 2 x 3 x 4 x 5
and similar pattern for 8 etc.

Now, chn going to have laminated books and I am looking for them working systematically and at how they record.  Just want to see what they can do.

How far do I take them????  Do I need to show the factorial??  If so, how do I explain it or do I just say it works???!!!

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
MzB

Im crap at explaining!!

The chn will record solutions e.g. for three books if matilda, charlie and choc fact and Esio trot,  they will record like

C E M
C M E
E C M
E M C
M C E
M E C

However, I know they won't record it like that!!  Then 4 books so adding in Danny Champion of the world

C E M D
C E D M
C M D E
C M E D
C D M E
C D E M

then the same for each other book at the start.  Some will record all and some will spot 6 x 4.

Then some may do 5 books, but doubt we will get there.

Usually I like to find generalisations and introcuce to chn, or at least HA chn e.g. in the forg invest, some got there themselves.

not a generalisation as such but for 3 books being arranged differently the solution is 1 x 2 x 3

4 books - 1 x 2 x 3 x 4

5 books 1 x 2 x 3 x 4 x 5

etc etc!!

Just not sure what Im doing really.  Focus is to see whether they can work systematically, spot patterns and make predictions.

This prob makes no sense.  Now been planning maths all frigging day!!

Here's a little online ext. activity if you need one, based around the same sort of thing:

It needs the latest shockwave version.

Gonna use some of your ideas when I do measures as they fab!!  So much maths there!!
