Not especially creative but we started with making a 100 square (template on Primary resources with some numbers completed) and the children used this to make a snakes and ladders board game. They also made a die with Roman numerals from a net template - opposite sides to total 7. Children enjoyed it and certainly threw up some interesting information on strategic methods for working out numerals and using patterns.

I taught a weeks lesson (year 6) about the history of maths and one lesson we looked at roman numbers. We tried to write sums and compared their number system with others.

If you want to do a display at this time of year, we did birthdays. Could look up the latin words for the months too. (Did they have the same calendar then??)

I think they had some of the months - but July and August were added in at some point by them (in honour of Julius Caesar and Augustus, I suppose) as originally September, October, November, December were the 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th months respectively.
They had things like the 'Ides of March' which I don't exactly understand...

[/b]IDESof March comes from the Latin word: idus meaning middle.

And from my O level Julius Caesar (beware the ides of March) I seem to recall it's 17 March.
