impetigo

One of the children in my class has this. It looks awful. I'm sure they used to have to stay off school with this at one time.
littlebigfish

Children aren't allowed to go to the nurseries I've been involved with when they have it.
You should check your school's policy... it's very contagous.
rubbadubbas

Our LEA policy is 2 days off or until the scabs have healed.

Toddler rubba had it 3 weeks ago by his eye. It was really nasty and I kept him off a week, but the nursery said he could have gone back before that.
wotsitagain

wotsit4 had this earlier in the year.  The doc said she need not stay off school, but she is at secondary so maybe it is different when children reach an age where physical contact is unlikely.

I was told that children could be in school if the lesions could be covered with a dressing (my daughter had it once on her knee) otherwise they should be at home until the blisters had crusted over.
greyengine

It is very contagious but I think ok once it's scabbed over.  Can be quite hard to get rid of too, especially if a bit run-down.
redredrobin

The health protection agency says "Children with impetigo should be kept away from school or nursery until the blistering and crusting have stopped, or until 48 hours after starting antibiotic treatment"

It didn't look like it had crusted over to me.

It's round his mouth too so he's bound to be touching it all the time.

Our school nurse said 48 hours after medication started same as RRR but noting about scabs or blisters!
vegaslady

my three year old had it around her mouth and the child minder wouldn't have her! I thought it was ok if it was covered (i once had a child with it on his bum cheeks, very quiet and shy boy, i had to let him sit on a chair during carpet time to stop it being irritated!) surely school has a policy for this? we have a list up in the p/c room of how long they have to be off with variety of illnesses.

Another child in my class has got it now we think and she sits next to the child I mentioned before. The parent said at parent's evening last night that she will be keeping her off if she has it. She's meant to be playing a big part in my class assembly tomorrow as well but nevermind.
