help with child at phase 2 phonicsI have a child in my class who is very behind in all elements of the curriculum and is operating at the level of an early reception child despite being in Year 2. I struggled to cater for him in every subject but particularly literacy. Was wondering if any of you early years people could suggest independent activities I could give him that require minimal preparation or could be used again and again? TIA
edited to add that he can only recognise about 6 sounds and cannot read any words at all

I'd like to help if I can. When you say he recognises 6 sounds- do you mean he can listen to spoken words ( without seeing the word written down) and hear which sound they begin with? Or do you mean he points to the grapheme 's' and says 'sss' ?

Sorry, I meant he recognises the graphemes and says the sounds. He is also able to generate words which begin with some of these sounds as well. He is beginning to recognise rhyme as well.
A statement was applied for last year but it was turned down. The SENCO believes that he will never get help as he is 'thick' (her word not mine) rather than having specific difficulties. He gets no home support and I feel we are completely failing him. What happened to every child matters - this one clearly doesn't.

So I assume you mean working with satpin? And you would like some wordbuilding activities using these GPCs?
Could he use the computer for these activities or do they need to be table top?

They can't be computer based as we only have one in the classroom and it's a laptop for teacher use only (daft eh?). I don't think he could do word building on his own. I was thinking of more basic than that (don't ask me what though lol). Thanks for your help.

I have put some ideas in resources to get you started. If you save them and use them as masters as he gets new GPCs you can alter these sheets to bring in those sounds. Hope you find them useful.

What about the photocopiable games in the Jolly Phonics handbook. games from Playing with Sounds and Progression in Phonics stuff? I still use them a lot!

There are also free printables for each grapheme on the starfall site
http://www.starfall.com go to abc area and then printables at the top.
If you are following L & S and working in a synthetic phonics structure then not all will be suitable, but the initial sounds ones are useful when introducing a new grapheme
