Grrrr INSET!

Why do teachers need another bl@@dy day off???  Laughing

Got to toddler rubba's nursery this morning to find it was shut for INSET. Many angry parents all muttering that phrase!

He only goes in Mon-Thurs. The letter had been sent out on Friday!  Rolling Eyes

I heard similar in a queue the other day- someone complaining that their child was off for a training day today "Bloody teachers are never at work, no wonder kids aren't doing so well these days". Hubby quickly moved me out of the queue as he saw my argumentative face appear Very Happy
Night Garden

I have today off and an INSET tomorrow. I wonder what our parents will be saying.
cofnchoc

Wise move by OH!!
rubbadubbas

I had to bite my tongue outside this morning too. People just don't understand.
cofnchoc

Must say they have a point with them only being informed on Friday. Doesn't really give people much of a chance to arrange child care if needed.
jenny_pest

It was rather short notice to tell you all on Fri - especially if it had been all prearranged. As for the "too many days off" I just get so annoyed with it. I can't even argue anymore about it because other people just do not understand what teachers have to actually do!!!

Did you have a nice day with toddlerubba in the end?
Rainbow_Bright

I don't bother reacting when people say things about too many days off.  There's no point because it'll never change people's attitudes.   On the other side of things, though, I do get hugely annoyed with teachers (some of them my friends!!)  who never seem to stop complaining about how hard their job is, how stressed they are, underpaid etc.  Yes, it's hard work, stressful and of course we should all get paid more but then the same is true of most other jobs out there!   I've always seen the holidays as a pay off for not earning as much as I could in the private sector, for example.   Not saying anyone on here is like that, but I've heard so many people complain that I just wonder why people like that don't find something else to do instead of giving us all a bad name!
rubbadubbas

Yes thanks Jenny Pest, we got wrapped up and went for a realllllllllly long walk.

I have to agree RB. Our holidays are a great trade off for some of the things people in the private sector get. Plus I never have to re-apply for my job like my friend has to.... almost once every 15 months they have a reshuffle.
rubbadubbas

But the long and the short of it is INSET days are NOT 'days off' - I wish the public could appreciate that we do work on them.
Rainbow_Bright

They're not.... though I do know of schools who still get an 'inset' day for Christmas shopping!!!!
rubbadubbas

Ah well there you go - perhaps some of the public have a point!
jenny_pest

Yeah I do know some schools too like this RB - I wish mine did! Not even allowed a PPA day at home!
greyengine

We had joint INSET with 3 other schools today (not at my own school) and when we arrived there were some parents trying to deliver their children to school and rather upset to find they had another day to wait.
jenny_pest

I had a child go home sick today at 11am and the parent said "But he's only just come back to school, does he have to come home?!"
kathemy

Don't get too carried away thinking that the private sector get paid more than state - certainly in my school we don't!  I do get  more holiday, but my day is certainly longer than anyone else's.  Children arrive in classroom from 8.15 for an 8.30 first lesson with final registration at 4pm but my pay is pretty much on the same scale as state.
redredrobin

I know of one school that has a christmas shopping day but the teachers come back for inset a day early at the end of the summer to make up for it. Unfortunately the parents wouldn't realise that though when they catch the teachers out shopping!
Rainbow_Bright

I didn't mean private schools, kathemy, but jobs outside of teaching in the private sector.   I worked as a translator for a while before teaching and had the potential to earn quite a lot more doing that than teaching, for example.   Most of my non-teacher friends earn a fair bit more than me as well but I like my holidays!
kathemy

Sorry RB, yes you're right outside of teaching the pay is better, but as you say we do get the holidays which I must admit was one of the reasons why I switched from 'the other side' into teaching  Laughing
Rainbow_Bright

Same here!   I sometimes envy the staff at the local prep school for their hols but their school day is as long as yours and then all the extra curricular stuff you have to do means you're not on an easy number by any means!!
kathemy

Yeah there is quite a lot of 'extra curricular' but at the end of the day I'm quite happy and most importantly really enjoy the children.
Night Garden

None of my friends ever 'joke' about me getting long holidays. Once they have travelled with me they soon realise the benifits of travelling outside school holiday time!
bluerose

As a parent and teacher would be better though if INSET days were fixed for all schools at start or end of holidays as odd days here and there do make childcare a nightmare. Doesnt mean see school as childcare but its about how people without extended families and who work cope
