Geography Observation

Next week we are having amini ofsted kind of thing and i thought i would do geography.  I planned it over the summer holidays so nowlooking back on itdnt think its great.  Wondered if anyone had any ideas the
Our topic is weather
WALT investigate the weather in France
I planned to read the french version of cinderella prior to the lesson.  Then some how i put through brochures investigate weather in france

Then link to the story they have to decide when cinderella would like to get married and relate it back to the weather either through description of wedding etc.
hmmm What do you think, any ideas would be greatly appreciated thankyou

Your learning objective isn't learning related, rather activity related.  What actually do you want them to learn?
talulabell

oh, well i want them to know about the weater in france.  Over 3 weeks we r covering 3 climate zones, vietnam, canada and france.
jog_on

How about 3a Pupils should be taught:

to identify and describe what places are like [for example, in terms of weather, jobs]

?

I think the link between Cendrillon and the weather in France is a little tedious.  Are you focusing on a particular area of France?  What is the purpose of the whole unit?
talulabell

its QC weather around the world unit 7
investigating places, what is place like.  However we have a term to cover it so can streatch it out.
talulabell

Maybe i cld do it more as a line of enquiry
talulabell

its this one http://www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/...7/?view=list&column=objective
bscaca

What year group?
talulabell

year grp 4
jog_on

So, really, if you want to link it to the wedding, your objective would be: to learn about the effect of weather on human activity???

Can I describe the effect of weather on human activity?
bscaca

is it the first lesson for the unit? have you assessed prior learning?
talulabell

oh get you jog_on thanks for help.  Is it weak? lol.  Unsure what to do
bscaca

If its at the beginning of the unit don't you need to do some general stuff on weather first in this country then compare it with other countries?
talulabell

not first lesson, we have looked at the 3 main climate zones and looked at weather forcasts.
talulabell

true suppose we could do something on our country
bscaca

Could they write a weather forecast for France for radio which you could record and playback?
jog_on

I think it's quite weak, yes.  Sorry Sad

STARTER:  How about starting with a few weather reports for the UK and sorting them into months of the year according to what they already know about weather and seasons e.g. snow, you would expect to be in Jan/Feb?

MAIN:  How about introducing the children to a French character e.g. puppet?  Tell the children that he is a business man and as such will be travelling all over France.  Split children into groups and give them different regions to research.  By the end of the lesson, they should be able to describe the weather throughout the year in the region and should explain the impact this will have on what the puppet takes with him on his travels.

Before researching this, I would provide the children with key vocab which you would like them to use e.g. rainfall, temperature etc.

You might wish to demonstrate the kind of presentation they will be able to do by pretending the businessman has just left the UK by the way of London or whatever.  This would model the things you are looking for in the children's work.

PLENARY:  Children present their ideas.  Where would the children like to visit and why?  Why might the weather be warmer in the south?  Why might it be cooler in the North?

Are you actually linking it to French?  If so, the previous few lessons you could get the children to learn how to describe the weather e.g. il fait beau and present the weather in the TL.

or

you could do clothing and describe what someone would need e.g. le pull
talulabell

could link to french hadnt thought about link.  We wont have ict suite to lesson so not access to computers as only have smartboard in class.  Like idea though.  Thanks for being honest i like it.
jog_on

Hmm...perhaps you could focus on one area then?  How were you intending on them learning about the weather in one area?  Provide them with weather reports?
talulabell

spread it out over a few weeks linking to different countires. Like the idea of weather reports and soting them into seasons for uk and france wld be similar.  However when i planned it was unsure about ict availability
jog_on

Do you have to do geography?  Is it going to be the type of thing where you're not sure when you'll be observed?

If you do know, I would pick a stronger lesson!
talulabell

dnt know when i will be observed or i cld pick re or citizenship which would be starting off topic.
Moospan

Couldn't you get them to present a TV weather report for their region after they have done some research, link to french with a few phrases eg ils pluirent (raining! can't remember! please correct!) then film them (if poss) so they can watch it back. Kids love role play and will have all seen weather reports, links to coastal and mountainous regions links to good understanding of how weather is different in different terrains etc.
talulabell

re is reflecting on groups we belong to.
jog_on

If you can't do the research, I can't see how you can do the lesson.  Does that make sense?

RE sounds ok - start a new thread and we can help you plan that.  I think that you need to be prepared if it could be any lesson!
talulabell

i think your right.  Thanks for help.  I hate not having laptop trolleys
sal 26

Some really nice ideas in this thread!
talulabell

They r really inspiring just dont know how to do them without computers
Moospan

Why not, if you have talked about typical weathers for different terrains such as sunny by the beach, snowy in the mountains, then you can discuss different regions in france and get them to make up what the weather would be like? eg In Nice this weekend it looks like glorious sunshine with the chance of cloud.
bscaca

have you got easispeak mirophones? if you have you don't need it suite.
talulabell

I have one! What were you thinking
bscaca

Record the forecast and playback for children to evaluate!
talulabell

I like that idea and maybe could just record a few.  Just not sure how they will get the info, i am being thick lol
bscaca

Could you play some weather forecasts from internet as model?
talulabell

Maybe i could change objective which willnot need research linked to
Section 2: Where are hot and cold places located on a world map?
Children should learn:

to ask and respond to geographical questions
to recognise patterns
to use geographical vocabulary
about weather conditions around the world

View related activities and outcomes

Section 3: Where can we go on holiday? How will we get there?
