feijoas.it's feijoa season. hooray! I love them.
They have a limited season but there are usually heaps around.People who have trees get loads more than they need. They are more special because they are only available for a short time. A bit like asparagus. Although that seems to have an extended season these days.
Anyone one else have a favourite fruit or vegetable that is seasonal?

I have never heard of feijoas Tui!
These days so many fruit and veg are available all year that I think eating seasonally is a lost art unless you grow your own.
In particular I always look forward to our asparagus on the smallholding which are wonderful from the end of April to end of May/beginning of June. I also love our cherries at the end of June if I can protect enough before the birds get there! Then in the autumn I look forward to picking the walnuts and saving them for xmas- again not many as the birds get them too!

I haven't heard of those either- sound interesting.
My fave seasonal fruit is pomegranate- used to signal the start of Autumn for me, but I noticed them in Asda the other day which just seems wrong!

I really love English strawberries. The season is relatively short but the taste is fantastic.

i love strawberries as well. I have never had pomegranites. I have seen them for sale but they are horrendously expensive here as they are imported. i try to eat local in season fruit as it tastes better. Fruit that has been transported across the world is often disappointing.
Smallholder, I am surprised the birds get the walnuts. I would have thought the shell would protect them, or do they eat them before they get big?

It s the Crows and Rooks that get them. They drop them from a height to crack the shells and then dig into them with their powerful beaks. Grrrrr!

They taste like themselves! no other fruit to compare. they are quite tart and best eaten raw. cut it in half and dig it out with a spoon. I just got 2 boxes full from mum's trees so I will freeze some.
They originated in South America but care common here as they are so easy to grow and prolific fruiters.

Peas - there's nothing like pooping them open and munching them straight from the plant.

I really like strawberries too and have my very first homegrown one just ripe and ready to eat. I'm looking forward to it
