Deaf sentence - David Lodge

just read this new book.  Really lovely.  About a retired lecturer who is going deaf, and having to deal with life, his successful wife, his increasingly ill dad and alarming family.  Very funny, and thoughtful, as David Lodge novels always are.

Just got it from the library this morning, will let you know what I think when I have read it.

I loved it - a really well-written book. I love David Lodge books. I've been re-reading his earlier books recently and still really enjoy them even though I know the stories really well.

which is your favourite? I think How Far Can You Go? was his best.

Hawk from things you have said about only having one pair of shoes etc, his dad reminded me of you Laughing Enjoying the book so far!

his dad reminds me of my dad!

I didn't like it in the end. I finished it in the middle of the night when I couldn't sleep and by the end I was just glad to finish it, the only bits I liked were the bits about his dad coz I liked the character!

How far can you go is my favourite too. I've read it so many times I can practically recite it! I also love the series with Maurice Zapp in because the characters are so well written.

It's a shame you didn't like it magpie. It's still worth trying some of his others as they're quite different from each other.

I love David Lodge! First read his books nearly 20 years ago when one was a course book at uni (someone else's course) - might have been Small World. Read all his books several times over. he was one of my 'train to uni or home or anywhere else' authors. Really good writer.
Magpie - if you do try some of his others, don't start with his first book the Picturegoers. Its worth reading if you're a fan, but not one of his best.
