Shaun Tan The Arrival  tells the story of an immigrant without words. Shaun talks about the book under the pictures relating to it on the website.

His other books are good as sophisticated picture books. The Rabbits deals with native inhabitants of a land being swamped by dominant incomers. Being Australian, it is of course a parable of European settlement and the Aboriginals.

Interesting art work and a good website

The Shaun Tan work looks interesting Tui. One or two of my more able teenagers might like them.

They would be suitable for teenagers. The art work is more suitable for older children and teenagers.

Yes its beautiful - I love it -but its also quite sophisticated so many of the special needs kids I work with would not always be able to understand it - but one or two will. Thanks for the link.

The Bear by Raymond Briggs may be more accessible for special needs teenagers.
lovely illustrations. Understated humour of the child having to hide the bear and having to clean up its mess.

Yes I like The Bear and have used it successfully.
