Breadmaker just arrived!

Now I'm torn between the planning I was just getting my head around and reading the instructions and baking a loaf!!! Very Happy
trinity0097

Make a loaf, the do the planning whilst it's cooking!

Now for the next thing that you need to know - to cut bread really effectively don't press down, just use a sawing motion from side to side!
Rainbow_Bright

Right...it's on!
trinity0097

Yay! Smile  Did you do a quick loaf of a long loaf?
Rainbow_Bright

Gone for a long loaf to start off with.  Gives me more time for planning too Wink
mug!

When it is cooked make sure you cut the crust off whilst it is still warm and chomp, lovely!
trinity0097

Is it starting to smell nice?
fccwidow

my husband can't stand the smell of my bread cooking says it makes him feel sick so I raraley use my breadmaker Sad
Sniggle

hmmmmmm.......could be tempted to buy one. I just love the smell of bread cooking.

Warm bread and proper butter - yum yum
Rainbow_Bright

Smells lovely...nearly ready now!

Fingers crossed Smile  Fresh homemade bread is one of my favourite things ever.  I used to make my own by hand every now and then but it's a long job so I gave in and treated myself to the breadmaker. As long as it makes a decent white loaf, OH will be happy!!!   Personally, I'm excited about baking rye bread and tasty combinations AND making pizza dough!
Rainbow_Bright

YUM YUM YUM!!!
Sniggle

My mouth is watering at the thought Laughing
Rainbow_Bright

Well, sniggle, the first loaf is delicious.  Just a boring white loaf to try it out but it's yummy. Used an old breadmaker before which I'd borrowed but it never quite worked right.  I got the Panasonic SD 255 (on a friend's recommendation) from Amazon - £83.  It's £117 in argos.  Ordered it Friday night and it arrived today!   Need to stop munching on the bread, though, as OH is cooking a curry!
fccwidow

you are making me hungry ! Perhaps I will get my breadmaker out whilst hubby is at work ! Smile
Rainbow_Bright

Yay!  Do it!   Very Happy
trinity0097

Gald it turned out well - it's easy isn't it!  Next time try the quick loaf, just use about 1/4 teaspoon extra yeast to get as good results as with the takes ages one!
Rainbow_Bright

I will do, trinity!  This loaf won't last long so it'll be tomorrow probably Smile   I'm so excited about using the timer so I can have fresh bread in the mornings!
trinity0097

Depends what you want to use it for - if you want to make sandwiches from it I'd make it the night before, otherwise you end up using half the loaf as it's too soft to cut in normal sized pieces!
Rainbow_Bright

Thanks for the tip!   But fresh bread and jam for weekend breakfasts - yum!!
jog_on

I'm sooooo jealous!  Sad

IBS is affected by bread though, so have to be careful!
Sniggle

Think I'll have to put one on my christmas list!
Rainbow_Bright

I used to suffer badly from IBS as a teenager, jog_on, and ended up cutting various things out of my diet to try and find out what set it off.  My worst trigger is dairy products, which is a bummer because I love cheese!   But, thankfully, I've grown out of the worst of it and can now eat most things as long as I don't overdo it on anything.

Suspect homemade bread would be better than shop bought anyway - fewer additives and all - and there are lots of gluten free recipes which I was recommended to eat as well!!!
jog_on

Yes, guess it would be...though I think it's possibly the yeast in it!?!
JD1970

Mmmm... I love my Panasonic bread machine. Had it about three years now and I still get excited when the smell starts to drift out of the kitchen.
StanLambchop

I've got the same panasonic model and haven't bought bread for a year and a half, wouldn't be without it now.
Rainbow_Bright

Woohoo!   That's what I hope to be like, StanLambChop!   Working well so far - made my grandma some rye bread and she couldn't tell the difference between that and the expensive stuff from the bakers! Very Happy
JD1970

The only trouble is with homemade bread, is that I'm rubbish at slicing it for sandwiches.
Rainbow_Bright

Like trinity says - you have to wait until it's cooled down really.  Still, OH always ends up with doorstops.  He said he might buy us a slicer next!!!!
trinity0097

They key is to cut bread that's at least 12 hrs old, not ultra soft and fresh, use a good bread knife with a sawing action, don't 'press' as you cut, just saw backwards and forwards and it will take slightly longer but you'll be able to get reasonable slices for sandwiches then.
nicolagraham

We have been making homemade bread by hand this week and have really enjoyed it (OH is quite an expert) but it does take sooooo long!

Might fancy one of these breadmachines but the next on my list is a posh food processor- mind you one of the reasons I was going to get this was to mix the door like my MIL does- hmmmmm!
Rainbow_Bright

Mix the door?!

Proper homemade bread is lovely, and I do like making it by hand too but unless I get to be a lady of leisure, the breadmaker is the way to go.

Haven't used a food processor much ever.  Mum used to have a proper one but even she put it at the back of the cupboard some years ago.  I use my electric whisk a lot and have one of those handheld soup 'zooosher' things which has a mini 'chopper' attachment as well for making things like curry paste, homous etc.
nicolagraham

mix the dough! Don't know where that came from!

We've never really used food processors much either but MIL who is an excellent chef does loads in hers- crumbles, cakes, bread dough (up until the point of kneading- ie the messy bit!), meatballs etc. While I can do all of these by hand I'm looking for things that might save me some time! Smile

Pleased you're happy with your breadmaker RB! Smile
