whoa there pickle

Book Group- any interest?

If we did a nice, relaxed book group would anyone be interested?

We can make sure it is books easily obtainable and give plenty of notice. Would anyone be interested? If so state your interest below! If not I completely understand!
peeceee

maybe,,,but I am book picky and not much reading during term time but can be persuaded
chatty_teacher

I'd be interested!
Over40

I would be interested - nothing too 'heavy' during term time if possible.
magpie nic

count me in!
whoa there pickle

Should we trial it for Easter hols then? Then if people want to carry on they can and others could join in when they want?
tui

i'd be keen.
chatty_teacher

SOunds like a good idea!
smallholder

I'll happily dip in if it coincides with something I've read or have got on my to read pile!
Louiw

Count me in! which Mister Man book then? x
whoa there pickle

lol!
magpie nic

You'll have to argue with hubby, nutty, coz he wants the very hungry caterpillar Laughing
musicmaker

I'd be interested.  Very Happy
hcuks

count me in depending on book choice
tui

What is in your to-read pile smallholder?
smallholder

Well I was probably going to choose from one of these charity shop buys -
Tennyson's Gift - Lynne Truss
Ali Smith - The Accidental
Khaled Hosseini - A Thousand Splendid Suns

What's in yours?
tui

i have thousand splendid suns in my pile as well.
is lynne truss the apostrophe lady?
smallholder

Yes - she has written a number of comic novels as well as her popular books on punctuation and manners - she writes columns for british newpapers such as the Times and Sunday Times and is a writer of features and programmes on BBC Radio 4. 'Tennysons Gift' - maybe a bit too British for you in that it is  a comic novel about Alfred Lord Tennyson ( romantic poet) and Lewis Carrol.
tui

just looked up Tennyson's gift. Sounds great. i'll look out for it.

I have Married to a Bedouin by Marguerite vna Geldermalsen still in my pile.
and According to Queeney by Beryl Bainbridge  novel about Samuel Johnson
smallholder

I've read According to Queeny which I enjoyed. I quite like Beryl Bainbridge.
tui

I don't mind British!
I had Bill Bryson's Shakespeare in my list as well but it has disappeared with my daughter who lives 400 kms away. i'll get it back eventually. She said she would take a photo of her bookcase so I could keep track of all my books that she has borrowed!
smallholder

I find it really difficult to loan out books!
tui

my daughter just takes!  i am glad she keeps reading though. other people i am less keen to lend to. Books do have a habit of disappearing for good.
smallholder

Yes I've had several experiences like that which have made me more cautious. Talking about the Samuel Johnson book just now made me think of a non fiction book about the creation of the first Oxford English Dictionary 'The Meaning of Everything' by Simon Winchester - that's a fascinating read.( I am a dictionary collector - I even have a small one of Maori place names!)
Anyway time for bed for me, its been a busy few days. I've enjoyed our book chat. Thanks.
tui

i have heard of it but not read it. sounds interesting. i have quite few dictionaries as well.
cofnchoc

Count me in. Books here are exxy - usually swap with people at school and bring back 3 or 4 after I've been home. I've got a thousand splendid suns and wanted to keep it to read again.
I'm open to anything at any time - I can use amazon or somewhere to get hold of whatever is decided on.
Can I suggest that we leave it to pickle & tui to decide? Might be easier to make a decision that way.
tui

Three Cups of Tea iby Greg Mortenson is a great read. i recommended it on an earlier book group thread. Also the Guernsey Potato Peel Pie Literacy Society.
I also have the Memory Keepers Daughter by Kim Edwards waiting to be read.
any takers for any of those or others mentioned on this thread?

My third copy of this arrived this morning- hopefully this time I will have chance to read it!
tui

It's a quick read. I hope you enjoy it.
mrsbean

Anything to do with books and I'm in! I do struggle to get through a book in term-time though, so maybe we could discuss something at the end of the Easter holidays to give people a chance to read it?
cofnchoc

Shall we go with the Guernsey one then?
Available here http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_...el+Pie+Society+&x=16&y=19
I'll go with Mrs Bean's suggestion of an Easter read.
mrsbean

I have ordered it - looking forward to a good read as I haven't anything on the go at the moment. What date shall we start discussing it then?
cofnchoc

I'll get it sent to the UK - going home for Easter. I'm going to order 3 cups of tea at the same time as it sounds like an interesting read. In fact, I've got quite a long list of books to order thanks to the suggestions on the other book thread.
Louiw

I have just ordered both too cofnchoc! I like the sound of both of these!
Amazon's going to wonder why the run on these books!!!
Loui
redredrobin

I've ordered it too!
I wouldn't recommend The Accidental as mentioned earlier - I hated it!
I am planning to read The Memory Keepers Daughter so would love that to be on a to read list.
chatty_teacher

Have just ordered the Guernsey Potato Peel Pie Literacy Society, sounds good!  I always like a good recommendation!  Wonder what else I'll order while on Amazon!!!
smallholder

That sounds a good book - I shall look out for it in my charity shop!
chatty_teacher

Only £50 spent at Amazon!  2 books recommended on here, the new Freya North, not out till April, there's a boy in the girl's bathroom and Nigella Express!  Oops!  NOw where will I put them!?
Louiw

Oh, I LOVE There's a boy in the Girl's bathroom!!! It's sooo good!
Louix
Wizz

Oooh!  Coincidentally, Guernsey Potato Peel Pie Literacy Society is the book that I am currently reading so I will try and join in.
tui

Great so that is 3 people for Guernsey potato peel. Any others?
chatty_teacher

Who's that then?

tui
chatty_teacher
tui

and wizz
chatty_teacher

and hopefully whoa there as it's her idea!
whoa there pickle

lol I am up for any book as you know!
tui

great. we have enough for a start. What date shall we set? to discuss Guernsey Potato Peel etc?
Of course we can always choose another book and have 2 discussions going so keep the suggestions coming.
Over40

I'll join in with "Guernsey Peel..." but need to get it first - within the week.
chatty_teacher

Mine won't be delivered till this week, then have to actually start reading it!  Maybe start of following week?  or sunday afternoon/evening?
magpie nic

I'll get it this week as well so I can join in!
tui

i have to get mine back from the friend I lent it to. I'll see her next friday so week after is good if that is enough time for everyone. The book is in the form of letters so it isn't a very high wordcount.
cofnchoc

I'm in for this and have ordered it but delivery to the UK so won't get it till the Easter hols. Do people mind waiting till then - if not count me out and I won't look at the posts when it starts!

This looks useful http://www.readinggroupguides.com/findaguide/best_of_new.asp
tui

That's a great list cofnchoc.
I have read lots on there especially 2005. the list form 2007 and 2008 have lots I have been meaning to read-
The Glass Castle is excellent.
Balzac and the little Chinese seamstress is fabulous.
Mister Pip  -very good
Three Cups of Tea -i keep raving about that! wonderful expecially as it is true.
I can also reccommend Reading Lolita in Tehran
cherryblossom

I was given the accidental for xmas ! havent read it yet.
yeah id be up for the book group...
jog_on

I'll join you!

How will it work though? x
cofnchoc

There's a list of suggested discussion points here http://www.readinggroupguides.com...literary_pie_society1.asp#discuss
that we could perhaps use.
If that link doesn't work just have a search round the link I posted before.
tui

Some of those discussion points are awfully serious. I'll have to read the book again taking notes!  still once we've had a wine or three and got on our gumboots I'm sure we'll be able to make short work of them. Laughing
cofnchoc

Haven't read them to be honest - just saw they were there! We can bring them down to our level - gumboot level!
cofnchoc

Books are probably fine. One of the reasons I've never joined a real book club is because I'm afeared of getting hard questions to answer and it all being a little highbrow. I know I'm safe here!!
mrsbean

If we could agree to discuss it mid-April that would be great! Time to read at the beginning of the holidays. Oh, and no cheating by posting snippets on here before we all get a chance to read it!
pink_monkey

I'm in.
redredrobin

I'm in too.
musicmaker

What do I need to read?  Confused
tui

okay. Plenty of time. April will be holidays for me as well.

Our bookclub in the real world is very superficial but we share our books around and drink lots of wine and have dessert. excellent.
cofnchoc

We can do that!!

Music maker - the guernsey potato one.
tui

i have my real book club this friday  i hope the person who read Guernsey Potato doesn't rave about it too much or the others will be annoyed when i swipe it back!

i looked at a website about Guernsey when i read it as I knew nothing about it. Has anyone been to Guernsey?
wotsitagain

I honeymooned in Guernsey.

The book sounds very interesting, I shall have to try and read it for the online bookgroup.
cofnchoc

Have friends who live there. Stayed a good few years ago - very pretty.
magpie nic

I got the book today- looking forward to reading it. Got it from the library, but couldn't get any of the others I wanted.
tui

i hope you enjoy it!
Louiw

Mine came today!!! looks good!
Louix
mrsbean

mine came on Tuesday and I have already started it! Looking good so far!
cofnchoc

According to email from UK neighbour mine's arrived too - 3 more weeks till I get to see it though!
magpie nic

It does sound very good- not started reading it yet coz I have another Matthew Bartholomew chronicle on the go- I love these books!
tui

I got my copy back on Friday night. so i will read it again. I read it in January very quickly so need to refresh my memory.

Magpie,  I haven't heard of Matthew Bartholomew Chronicle . Tell us more .
mrsbean

I am LOVING the book - could hardly put it down to go out this morning. Having a good chuckle at some of the letters.
tui

It's great isn't it. We aren't allowed to give anything away til cofnchoc has a chance to read hers.
magpie nic

Tui, matthew bartholomew chronicles are written by Susannah Gregory, set in 14th century Cambridge university and town. He is a physician who solves crimes. Nice easy reading, I love them, there are lots in the series, this is the 5th one I have read and really enjoying it.
Then will start the Guernsey one!
tui

I'll look out for them. i'm going to a second hand bookshop today since i'm in the big city.
mrsbean

Promise i won'tgive anything away! My lips are sealed!
magpie nic

No spoilers until we have read it... or else Laughing
mrsbean

As much as it pains me to keep quiet about something good...I will!
peeceee

wait are you all reading the guernsey potato peel ???? I read it already and LOVED IT!!!! still LOVE IT...want to go there and meet all the characters... could NOT put it down and didn't want it to end... when is the book club meeting...
tui

After Easter I think. in the holidays. We start our holidays at Easter for 2 weeks so the weekend after easter will be good for me.
mrsbean

Yes peecee - Guernsey Potato peel. i think the weekend after Easter is a really good plan - hopefully most people will have read it by then.
peeceee

Remind me so I can join in,,,, LOVED IT I tell you!!!hee hee...a must for everyone!
tui

Just got back from the bookshop. got a whole stack. Can't wait to start reading.
mrsbean

I finished Guernsey Potato Peel earlier in the week - can't wait to discuss it next month.
magpie nic
