Big favour!

I am bored, so bored, with my imaginary worlds planning.  I am going to be using the same text as the basis for writing the story (where the wild things are) as the plot is quite simple and easy to recreate...but, I'm in desperate need of some exciting ideas, particularly for the first week!

Please could someone share what they have done or send me planning?  Pretty please - would be eternally grateful!

I didn't teach this unit myself, but my colleagues in Y4 taught it recently.  I know they did quite a bit of drama, they used ICT to create imaginary world settings using Picassa (I think they downloaded some photos of unusual landscapes and then distorted them/re-coloured them) and they also went into our wildlife area to imagine what it would be like to live there, hiding in the shed etc.

I also found this, in case it's of any use (I particularly like the description of Honeyduke's)

Sorry not to be of more help

I am planning this later in the week and will email you the things, the hailton trust bit look like they may have a good first week.  Hadnt thought about using where the wild things are was going to do lion witch and the wardrobe
jog_on

The reason I am using where the wild things are is because it is short and the structure and plot are easy enough to recreate.  In fact, I think that we will learn the story - I might adapt it slightly...then we will play around with the language and I'm sure they will produce some great stories from it!  Will look at hamilton now, though I'm not a great fan if I'm honest!

Thank you for the offer of sending things - that would be great!

Colleague used small world exploration trays to create imaginary worlds.

Thank you!  Smile

We're actually going to use a bedsheet to create our own imaginary world.  I've done that part before for stories with historical settings and it was amazing!
talulabell

what do you do with th sheet?and what are small world explorations trays?
jog_on

You use the sheet to create an area - this could be a world/a town/a county/country etc.  Entirely your choice.  You stuff newspaper underneath in places to create a different landscape e.g. mountainous.  Use wool - blue to create rivers and lakes/brown for swamps etc.  Ask the children to think of places which will be nearby and add them on (the FLS cards could be useful here?) e.g. volcano, cave...so many the children will come up with.  Then talk about who could live where e.g. dragon lives in the cave.  You can build up the setting of your story doing this.  Each time the children tell you something e.g. volcano, ask them if there is anything special about it and if so, what?  They should then begin to add more description the next time around e.g. there is a magical volcano.

Use the sheet to ask the children ten ways in which they could cross the river/ten ways in which they could climb the mountain etc.

Endless possibilities for this!

Does that make sense?

we made story settings in shoe boxes (I got that idea from on here!) and plasticine models of their imaginary world creature.

Thanks jog on.  The iea souns good so it is like a 3d version of a place.  You could post it note descriptions on the map. How is your planning going?  What are yu doing in the first week.
talulabell

like build your wild self site, not sure what i would use it for though lol
jog_on

The first week will mainly be reading texts and familiarising themselves with the genre i.e. features of imaginary worlds texts, possible characters and settings, general planning outline.
