Bar Mitzvah

Hi, jst doing RE planning which happy to share but wondered if anyone had any links to videos etc linked to a  bar mitzvah so children understand the day.

Your school should have expresso CD's or DVD that shows a child going through his Bar Mitzvah. Other than that I have use a U tube version.

Have you seen Sixty six it's all about a boy planning his Bar Mitzvah which ends up being held on the day of the world cup.  Has some good scenes but don't remember what classification it has.  I love the film so if you haven;'t seen it it's worth a view even if you can't share it with the kids, it's usually on offer in the large supermarkets and well worth £2.99!

It's a 12 (I think) - my son was shown it in year 5 and I was fuming.  Not so much because of the swearing (which was the part that he and his friends remembered), but because if I want to show my year 6s a PG (like Home Alone) I have to send a letter home several days in advance to give parents the chance to decide if they want their child to watch - that's what PG means after all, so in principle I agree with my school's edict.  My son brought a letter home the day before so I had no chance to raise any objections.  As it happens, he has had a season ticket for White Hart Lane since he was 7 (my husband explained it to give me time to do work for my PGCE) so he didn't hear anything he hadn't heard before, but it was the PRINCIPLE of the thing!!!  Don't parents get wound up about the most ridiculous things.

Anyway - back to the Bar Mitzvah point - we have an local RE resources centre which lends out all sorts of artifacts.  I've borrowed prayer caps, tefillin, prayer shawls etc etc and then dressed a child up.  It's great! http://www.recentres.org.uk/pages/centresinfo.html
