Authorial intent

Does anyone have any great ideas for activities I can do to really help my class get to grips with this? I am currently marking a SATS paper that we did before half term and they just come totally unstuck when it comes to these types of questions.

Mine also really struggle with this.

I had some success last year by really concentrating on these questions in guided reading sessions (5 children and me).  I modelled answering the questions myself, speaking my thought process out loud.  This helped the ones who were struggling with the mechanics of finding an appropriately worded answer.

However, the ones who would not even think of using a metphor or an inferred fact in their OWN writing will always find it difficult to imagine why anyone else would do it!
