Anyone remember IZAL?

Got radio4 on at the mo and they seem to be having a whole programme devoted to Izal (medicated toilet paper)  Shocked  Shocked  Shocked

Am I the only one who remembers this?  And the sole purpose of anyone elected to the school council being to get soft loo paper in schools?  Apparently it was very good for practising Latin declensions, and others would see how many words could be made from MEDICATED.  There is even a song....

I remember it - used to be handy as tracing paper, and you needed to scrunch it about for ages to be able to use it!
chatty_teacher

I remember having to scrunch it so it didn't scratch your bum!
cofnchoc

I remember it too! My uncle was invited to a do at buck house and they used it there too!

My grandfather used to always use it. Kept his own supply in his bedroom when he lived with us (many years ago). Said he couldn't get used to the 'soft stuff'.

OH was just saying the same about his grandfather!
Sniggle

Yes I remember it. Horrible horrible stuff!!!!!
Rainbow_Bright

We had it at school too...   may explain my fear of running out of nice loo roll now!
smallholder

Of course I remember it. I remember one of my first priorities as a new DH of a special school was to change the loo roll for the kids. Teaching self help with IZAL was not easy!!!!!!
gorgeous51

Disgusting stuff - I can still remember the horrible smell of it too!  Didn't really do the job as far as I can remember!  Wonder why it was so popular - I suppose it must have been cheap.
wotton

I remember it, didn't flush properly, hated it
crispybacon

My Great Aunt used it until her death last year (in her outside privvy too), however she had progress to the roll version.

As children my sister and I referred to it as 'slippy toilet paper'.
Rainbow_Bright

I actually saw it for sale in tesco a couple of years ago!
greyengine

I remember it.
Oh, we had it hard in those days.  Kids today.....
mrsbean

Why did we have to have that as loo paper? It didn't work!
oatcake

I hated it!
nm97yd

Horrible stuff!
choccat

For years I refused to go to the loo anywhere but at home - think part of my fear was down to that horrible loopaper at school. Makes me shiver just thinking about it ugggggh!
magpie nic

Urrrggghhh, I remember it as well- was all my grandma used. Did make good tracing paper though!
bscaca

Gosh! Yes I remember it; awful stuff, although ok for tracing paper otherwise definitely not fit for purpose!

Like you RB I have  a fear of running out of loo paper and have copious amounts stashed around the house.
Rainbow_Bright

So glad I'm not alone, bscaca.  OH thinks it's hilarious that I always buy a pack when it's on offer even though it's just the two of us.   Still, he'd be annoyed if we did run out!!
kathemy

I remember it had a 'shiny' side and a 'rough' side, absolutely hated it with a vengeance.
redredrobin

Horrible stuff.
Now wondering if that's why my OH is so obsessed with having plenty of loo roll!
mug!

At least it didn't leave black newsprint on your bum!
