Hi, nice to meet you!
I am currently a Y1 teacher but have taught FS previously and mixed FS/Y1. The mixed Key Stage thing was fine in terms of where the children were at developmently, and I felt both groups benefited, especially the less able or less mature ones in both year groups. The planning was a bit of a pain though - "topic" stuff was ok as the FS objectives are so adaptable, but the lit and maths was more difficult. Don't know if the new Framework will have made this easier or worse. Your school might already have planning which you can use as a starting point, some LAs produce mixed class planning, or what I did was ask the Early Years Consultant for some help with it (also useful for backup if your school doesn't like the Y1s "playing"!)
Congratulations on your job - it will be fine, it is a great feeling to finally have your "own" class!

i have a reception /year one class. our system is different as our children start school on their fifth birthday but i will help if i can. my class currently has children who have been at school 2 weeks to a year so there is quite a range of skills. the oldest aren't necessarily the best either.

I have YR/Y1 - we teach phonics and maths separately to each year group. Don't know if others do this, but we are a 2 form entry and it seems to work well for us.
