another literacy observation!Hi everyone. I have yet another literacy ( well it could be anything but i guess i am supposed to be the subject leader!) observation on tuesday from the isp team as well as a mock ofsted interview type thing ( great!)
anyway i need a little bit of advice or help.
we are doing theres a biy in the girls bathroom and will be starting phase 2 , next week ,. the lesson i want tyo do wis where the children have to write an email ( or letter) to a character ( jeff) about his friendship with bradley.. the other alternative is the bit where bradley writes his list of things to talk about and the children have to report on what this tells us about his character?
I am at a loss really about how best to go about it. and would just appreciate any tips...
thanks

that list is funny - it is so random! Hard to focus it though, when teaching it (particularly for an observation)

yeah , i agree , it is a great list and will provke a lot of discussion , but in observation terms is hard to see what progression they could make, although my class are really bad at speaking and listening and the use of some kind of speaking frame was mooted after my last obs?
but shall i just play safe and go for the letter writing one? at least i can get something definite out of it?

dont want to make my life any harder than it already is ha ha , maybe i should just do maths instead!

well the email, you could follwo a sort of letter writing format. Write letters and emails and explore the formal/informal aspects of language??? Change a formal letter to an informal email, or vice versa???

Our head pointed out recently that it's harder to get outstanding in a lesson where children are writing independently - if they're getting on with their work you just don't have the chance to show off all your fab skills!!
If your class need speaking & listening practise and it's been suggested after your last obs, I'd be tempted to go for that one. If you structure it tightly enough with frames, modelling etc, you should get definite progress. Would you need "evidence" of where they're currently so that you can show progression? Strikes me this idea would give you lots of chances to say the stuff they like about "last lesson we did x and your work showed me you need to work on y. When you've achieved y we'll be able to move on to z in the next lesson".
Mind you, I've never read the book... What do others think?

like your suggestions knightrider... wonder if i could do a bad presentation so they could improve it for me? and use that as success criteria?
I am mfinding it hard t my new school as there is a lot of jargon and they are so tight on proving progression etc

Why not do some role play. One child is character A and other B. They talk in role what they would say to each other in the letter. You may have to 'hot seat' it if your class is not use to this.
maybe become this character and say something and get another Chn to reply to give them the idea? or a few and comment why a certain one was better.
Then maybe get them to write the letter together on A3/ A4 paper?
You BA could do it as a group?
Put up around the room and other pairs could annoteate things they like (based on SC) and a work on next time.
Pleanary could be talking about this and pairs feeding back?
If you had a visualiser I would use this also as part of the feedback.
Hope this helps.

Don't know whether it's relevant but last year JT set up a blog for Bradley that the children could contribute to. Don't know whether it's still there or if you could do something similar?

ooh i like that , i am hoping to do some emails to Jeff as I have set up an email , but yes a blog would be great i will message JT;-)
only trouble is im not sure what our servers let through. they block most things grr!
ok the lesson so far is looking like this
First of all I will model the activity but talk about Jeff instead
I am going to pull out some scenes and quotes from the book and summarise them in a sentence or two and make them into cards.
bottom end are going to match a sentence with an attribute of Bradley's character or an emotion and say why they match.
They will be given a talking frame to help them structure this. Bradley is .... because... they will have TA support
Middles will do the same , but with me starting them off and then independently
top end will be given cards and a list of emotions but prompted to use others as they see fit. they will also be challenged to generalise or to say why the author put this in the story ( level 5 stuff)
the children will then present to one another and peer assess saying what they thought they did will and a tip for improvement report back to the class for the plenary. and link back to learning objective.
I have an EAL boy in my class , who is unable to follow the story . I was thinking about giving him some emotion cards and then mixed up sentences for him to re order . some to illustrate and some to describe?
I admit i have struggled to do anything with him so far and he has ended up using education city on his own which is not helping him to communicate that much!
He can read his sentences to the TA

I set a similar one up for a book we were doing and our server let it through. Can't remember which service I used though. I will try and find it again.

just though i would update you . I got a good ( well very good , could almost have been outstanding if not for my dodgy handwriting!)
I am very pleased as i really wan't sure , butr they were impressed with all my children using inference and deducion skills , even though they wrote loads on the speaking frames!
hoestly i ask them to write and they talk, i ask them to speak and they write !
anyway im knackered after that. and now have my work cut out with the lit co ordinator stuff

Well done! I think you always feel like you have to prove yourself when you are the coordinator.
