Advice please

Started a new post january, i should complete my final term in this school. The class is y6 and i'm covering everything left by the teacher who left. However they said i was trying to fit in too much, but when i said it was what the previous teacher said they did a 180 and it was suddenly fine but maybe it was the way i was presenting it.
I was told a few children could be boistrious and they are being. I have it in the notes i took that the teacher named these children, but now that i'm having problems, the head and deputy are saying they were never like this before!
Then a couple of weeks ago the old teacher came back in to see them, where she told them the head had been on the phone begging her to come back. Well you can imagine the reaction the children have had to this, the last two weeks have been a nightmare.
I'm really worried i'm not going to pass now, and i've never had problems before, i did my other two terms in y6...

Hi daffs
Post this again in the primary forum as that's where everyone seems to be whether EYs, NQT etc. I'm sure someone will be able to help you out. Sounds that you are not getting the support you need. What's your mentor like? Have you tried talking things through with him/her?
Have you been for a look in the lounge? Very friendly, supportive and funny!

Thank you i'll follow your advice Smile not really had chance to look around yet.

My mentor is the head, i've only met with her twice since i started as she's too busy with head things.

Can you make a list for yourself of everything that is bothering you?  It seems to me that you have 3 problems - one is the comments you are receiving about lesson content/presentation style, another is behaviour management and the final one is the support (or lack of) from your mentor.

I find that once I've sorted issues into lists, it becomes clear which the most important are.  If your mentor is very busy, you need to maximise any time that you do get with her.  Write a list of questions you want answered (in priority order) and then get yourself a slot in her diary to go through them.

Is the person who taught the class in year 5 in the school?  If so, could they help you with how they handled these children?  Are you in touch with anyone from your course who might have ideas?  Are you in touch with anyone from your previous school?  Is there anyone you know at other local schools who could help you?  You'll find loads of helpful ideas and support on here (especially if you post in Primary cos I don't think anyone comes to NQT much).

My understanding is they can't fail you unless there is written evidence that you have been told what you need to work on and how you have been supported to meet these targets.  Don't forget - by employing an NQT the school accepted the responsibilities that go with that decision - to give you the support you need to become an outstanding teacher!

Finally, I suspect every year 6 class in the country is getting more and more boistrous by the day!  You really need to nail their behaviour as soon as possible though, because after Easter there are only 3 weeks back and then the SATS.  After SATS they will be high as kites, and (in my opinion), the only things that keep them off the ceiling are personal loyalty to and respect for the person teaching them - if you can convince them now that you mean business, your life will be so much easier then.

One thing you haven't mentioned is targets and SATS results - lots of schools really stress their year 6 teachers out about this, so if you're not feeling under pressure about them, I reckon there is some hope for you!!!

Good luck - when you have worked out specific questions you want answers to (what other people are doing curriculum content wise, how to handle specific behaviours), post away - people on here are always ready to help.[/list]

Thank you Smile

The person who taught them in y5 left last summer, the problem with organising meetings is they are organised and i turn up but my mentor's not there as they have somewhere more important to be and havent let me know

I'm trying to nail down on the behaviour but the old teacher really didnt help by doing what she did,

I'm being pushed about SATs but i just knew that was something that came with the job of y6 teacher Very Happy

Thank you again Smile
