Right guys please help  - I'm part time and I go to my share of staff meetings which happens to be on a day when I don't work - it's a pain TBH cos I have a little boy and have to arrange for someone to look after him etc etc.

Sooo I spoke to union and they said if I don't work on that day I don't have to go to any meetings on that day. BUT the LEA says you still have to do pro-rata amount of meetings/inset so I have to go to 3 out of every 5 meetings.

Argh just want someone to tell me what is correct?! Any advice?

Have you asked your union rep or looked at your contract?

Well in my contract only inset days are mentioned and I only work 15hrs a week so I only have to do the mornings of the Inset days.

The pay and conditions of part time teachers has recently been addressed - all schools are meant to look at this from Sept 08. I am in the NUT and there is a very useful document on our website. Here is a quote from it which refers to your query

"Part time teachers cannot now be required to work or attend non-pupil days on days when they do not normally work.  They may, however, agree to attend staff/departmental meetings, parents/open evenings and INSET days and other non-pupil days on such days by mutual agreement with the head teacher.

Where they do agree to work on days when they do not normally work, this cannot by definition be included in directed time.  The STPCD therefore includes a provision for additional payment for this working time.  The formula for this payment provides, in effect, for part time teachers to receive 1/1265 of the appropriate full time pay rate for each hour of additional working time.

The STPCD also provides, however, that part time teachers may be directed to work outside school sessions on days when they do normally work, even where they only work the morning session and the meeting is at the end of the afternoon session."

If your contract, like mine is for 39 weeks then you do the same number of hours of inset that you would normally work if its for 38 weeks then you dont have to do any and if you do they have to pay you, this is for inset. I think the staff meetings which are not inset would be different and would probably have to be put down separately in your contract or may have been stated at your appointment.

So best to get your contract looked at.

Go on the NUT website and read the full document. You don't have to be a member - just google NUT and it will take you there - then do a search for part time teaching - make sure you look at the pdf file that refers to these recent changes.
