Hi

We currently have 1:1 meetings with TAs at various points during the year but should there be set targets for them? When I had training on this some years ago it wasn't required but just wondering if this has changed?

We have targets in our personal development meetings. It is written down on our records and when we were given our new position it was taken into account to include these targets.

For instance, I do a lot of intervention programmes and I asked for one of my targets to include Springboard. This years position includes teaching Springboard as well as all the other intervention I do....

Not statutory but recommended. I had teachers pm from Sept 07 and once we got that right started TA and NTA pm from Sept 08.

Ours have PM once a year, only bad thing about our system is there is no classroom observation, or getting staff to feedback into the system who have the LSAs in their class - I think that people that go from teacher to teacher can slip under the net sometimes as no-one really takes responsibilty and if they're not 100% you can cope for an hour a week, whereas if you had them 25hrs a week you'd be more inclined to sort it!

This also isn't just TAs, it's all staff except the cleaning staff I think.

Thanks everyone.

We have one 1:1 meeting a year but it often seems to be more of a 'sounding off' time. Some TAs would like targets and some would like to see targets to improve others who they see as not pulling their weight. I also think discussion with teachers would be very useful.

Titch, if you don't mind me asking, what sort of targets do you have?

Madphil - who is responsible for the various groups in your school? In our school the head does teachers PM, I (as deputy) do TAs but I'm wondering about dinner ladies (ours would hate it with a passion!) and cleaners.

Hiya, don't mind at all and will list them for you...

Read and understand school policies and procedures

Implementation of these policies and procedures with evidence of how you have achieved this

Awareness, and involvement, in the implementation of whole school and class behaviour plans and sanction systems

Developing positive unified scripts to encourage children to act upon the language of choice

Sharing strategies of successful behaviour management and intervention plans

Partaking in behaviour management training that addresses areas of school development needs

Undertake and give training for intervention programmes and provide evidence with working with children ( Catch up, Springboard, Starwriter and Whitboard )

Support the writing of children's IEP/IBPs and provide evidence from working with children on their individual targets

Liase, half termly, with Class Teacher to exchange, discuss and evaluate individual/SEN groups progress and success. Contribute towards the next steps

In our school the site related minor support staff (i.e. cleaners) do not have a PM cycle, and we do not employ any of the canteen staff, they are provided by the service who provides our food service.

In my school TAs have at least two PM meetings per year. As all of our TAs are not classroom based but have focus groups (of children) and work with them out of class, their targets are related to the results (levels) that those children achieve in our termly tests. Also, personal development is one of the targets.

Thanks everyone, that's been really useful. I've spoken to our TAs and they are all keen to have a more formal approach towards PM, so that's good.
