I tried this on TES but didn't get anywhere.
I have mixed reception/Y1 classes. They have a fabulous learning space and are working on develoing workshop areas with challenge.
How do you organise your early years departments? |

| ours is nursery and reception all mixed, we have areas specifically for each group to enter and be registered, we can close off areas if wanted. Theres a joint wet play paint type area also a snack bar. Pupils can move between one area and another to choose independently from activities. The staff plan together and have a shared topic. Guess this could also work for Yr/Y1 although id expect more group work in there |

Hi
I have Yr/Y1 this year. We have parallel classes with a TA between us and the children free flow between the two classes and our super new outside area.
Each classroom has sand, water, art, maths, role play, construction, book, writing and carpet areas - one has an office and a challenge area - the other has an investigation area. We use topic based planning. Our day is broken into several inputs including, 3 Y1 phonics groups, 2 YR phonics groups (at the moment - maybe 3 soon) - topic input, Y1 maths and YR maths. Our TA does one Y1 phonics input, the other teacher and myself take it in turns to deliver a week of Y1 maths. Our Y1s also have 'passport' jobs. These are extension activities (5 at the moment) which the Y1s have to complete over the week. They have to show an adult that they have completed the passport task in order to get their passport stamped. They can do these jobs anytime, but particularly whilst we are teaching the focussed YR groups.
